Insurance

voted down
Gaines County Commissioners
decided against decreasing the
time for county employees to
become vested in the county
insurance plan at a special
meeting Monday.
A proposal was made to reduce
the time from 12 to 10 years at a
previous meeting, with
commissioners Aistructing county
auditor Harvey Hannah to check
into the cost.
At the Monday meeting,
Hannah said that it would cost the

The above author uttered that
phrase some time back and it has
stood the test of time.
Some us have come up with
excuses (some of us more than
others) for not attending Sunday
services to profess our faith.
Last week someone (we wish
we had gotten her name) brought
the following by the office to
have copies made and it struck us
that these excuses have been, used
by many people throughout the
years for not attending church.
The Baptist Voice Banner
published these excuses and their
remedy and we thought you’d
enjoy them.
"To make it possible for
everyone to attend church this
Sunday, there will be a special
"No Excuse Sunday."
—Cots will be placed in the
foyer for those who say "Sunday
is my only day to sleep in."
—We will have steel helmets
for those who say "The roof
would cave in if I ever went to
church."
—Blankets will be furnished for
those who think the church is too
cold and fans for those who think
the church is too hot.
—We will have hearing aids for
those who say the preacher speaks
too softly and cotton for those
who say he preaches too loudly.
—Score cards will be available
for those who wish to list the
hypocrites present.
—Some relatives will be in
attendance for
those who like to
go visiting on Sundays.
—There will be TV dinners for
those who can’t go to church and
also cook dinner.
—One section will be devoted
to trees ^nd grass for all those
who like to sec God in nature.
—Finally, the sanctuary will be
decorated with both Christmas
poinsettias and Easter lilies for
those who have never seen the
church without them.

Speaking of Sunday, we came
across a Sunday golfer’s version
of the 23rd Psalm (notice how we
got into one of our favorite
excuses) in our files.
Although it may seem more
attuned to warmer weather, it
does seem to fit with this column.
The "psalm" was contributed
by Mark A. Duntley, Jr. of the
Graduate Theological Union in
Berkeley, Calif, and goes as
follows:

budget to implement the new
procedure and commissioners
said they did not feel the county
should do so at this time.
They did say, though, that they
would like to look at possibly
reducing the lime period again
during next year’s budget
hearings.
In other business at the 25-
minute meeting, commissioners:
—Approved advertising what
elected officials’ salaries will be
with a four per cent salary
increase. Previously, salaries
were advertised without the
increase.
—Took under consideration a
request by the Gaines County
Junior Livestock Association to
put a door between the barn and
civic building to prevent suction
during the annual show in January
and install more drop lights in the
northeast corner of the show barn.
Commissioners told organization
spokesman Joe Rowlett that they
would check on the cost of the
projects and then make a final
decision.

Mailing
advice
offered
Local post office officials offer
the public the following tips in
mailing parcels during the pre-
Christmas mailing period.
Persons sending items should
address clearly both the sender
and recipient on the parcel,
including the zip code. Indelible
ink should be used.
Persons sending packages
should be aware of the need for
cushioning. Cushioning
distributes and absorbs shocks
and vibrations. Suitable types
include shredded paper,
polystyrene, bubble plastic or
popcorn foam.
