Divine Misfortune

By A. Lee Martinez
Teri and Phil are your average couple. Don’t have too little, but
are not wealthy either. The couple has varying degrees of fortune
and / or luck. Their lives are simple.
Teri and Phil are also a minority in such a way that neither have
a personal deity; unlike their neighbors, colleagues, and coworkers
they have decided to forgo the world without divine intervention.
They should have kept it that way.
Choosing a deity is complicated. Take your needs, your wants,
your desires, and then match them against what you are willing to
sacrifice. It is match (dot) com for gods and followers: photos, bios,
hobbies, likes / dislikes, end user agreements all listed for viewers.
Teri and Phil are suspect of their chosen god, Lucky. He ar-
rives on their doorstep with luggage via a hovering golden globe.
Underneath that tacky Hawaiian shirt and raccoon disguise lies an
apathetic work ethic, a penchant for junk food, and irresponsibility
for personal actions.
Lucky, the god of luck, brings misfortune. He fails to disclose
he has an ex-girlfriend (yes, another goddess) still heartbroken over
him, and an even larger angrier god seeking to destroy him. All
unbeknownst to his new followers, Teri and Phil.
Martinez does an excellent job of introducing deities from
around the world. The gods and goddesses are animated, fickle,
quick witted, volatile. In a word . . . mercurial.
Sure, there are cameos from Zeus, Hera, Thor, but none are as
amusing than Quetzalcoatl (Quick to his friends). Quick is the feath-
ered serpent ruler - god of the Aztec. Some others include: Nanook,
who is of the Inuit culture, Ogma is an Irish / Scottish god, Jurapari
