Bellaire crime declines
By Karl Doemer III
Crime in Bellaire dip-
ped 9.4 percent last
year.
It was the fourth year
in a row that the small
near southwest Houston
city has seen a decline in
its crime.
Bellaire Police Chief
Jerry Loftin released
figures last week show-
ing that major crimes in
Bellaire dropped from

702 in 1983 to 636 last
year.
However, crime in-
creased in the city in
three major categories —
robbery, assault and
auto theft -- the chief
reported.
Robberies increased
34.8 percent, from 23 in
1983 to 31 last year,
Loftin said.
Assaults increased
17.9 percent, from 28 in
1983 to 33 last year, her
said.
Auto thefts jumped
26.1 percent, from 46 in
1983 to 58 last year, her
said.
However, rapes, bur-
glaries and thefts de-
clined last year, Loftin
said.
Rapes declined 50
percent, from 2 in 1983
to 1 last year.
Residential burglaries
dropped 16.2 percent,
from 105 in 1983 to 88
last year, the chief said.
Burglaries of busines-
ses dropped 26.5 per-
cent, from 49 in 1983 to
36 last year.
Thefts decreased 13.4
percent, from 449 in
1983 to 389 last year.

There were no
murders in Bellaire in
either 1983 or 1984, the
chief said.
Loftin attributed the
overall crime drop in the
city to "a national trend
of decreasing crime.”
However, he said,
Bellaire’s crime has
been dropping for the
past four years, while
most other U.S. cities
have only seen drops
over the past year.
Explaining the in-
crease in robberies over
the past year, Loftin
said: "We have been
seeing some cases
where a person is
broken down on the
freeway (Loop 610) and
somebody pulls up and
robs him while he is
broken down. This hap-
pened all over Houston
in 1984."
Loftin attributed the
increase in assaults to
“mostly minor assaults
like fights and fusses
between two individuals
or a man and wife.”
On the auto theft
increase, Loftin said:
“Auto theft is up every-
where in Harris County.
I guess it's because the
parts on cars are easy to
strip and sell.”
He said burglaries
and thefts are down
because '■‘those are
areas we have been
concentrating on. We
have been putting extra
patrols in areas where
there have been prob
blems with burglaries
and thefts.
Bellaire is generally
hounded by Glenmont
Street on the north, the
Southern Pacific Rail-
road tracks on the cast,
Beechnut Road on the
south and Chimney Rock
Road on the west.
The 3.6-square-mile
city has 14,950 resi-
dents, 6,342 homes and
328 businesses.
