Mayor Kathy Whitmire will open the Showcase Friday, May 11
at 10 a.m. Events are scheduled until 6 p.m. that evening. The
Showcase will begin again Saturday, May 12 at 10 a.m., with
events scheduled until 4:15 p.m. The Showcase will feature
speakers, exhibitors and entertainment both days.
“This was really successful last year. The people took their
Passports to Health, filled with their medical test results, to their
doctors. They loved the health screening,” says Zoe Strock,
project manager for 55+ at Memorial Care Systems.
“I thought it was an excellent source for medical testing,” says
Lamar Vieau reviewing last year’s Showcase. “There was lots of
free testing available for people who didn’t want to spend the
money and the results were entered into a booklet.
"It was very valuable for people with lower incomes. It was a
place they could go for affordable medical care," adds Vieau, a
southwest Houston resident.
As visitors enter the convention center this year, they will be
handed a small booklet called Passport to Health. Next they’ll be
photographed and a polaroid snapshot will be attached to their
booklet. Then they’ll proceed through the various testing booths
where the results will be entered into their booklet.
Free testing available includes a computer readout of the corn-
southwest Houston resident and a volunteer of Memorial 55+ at
Memorial Care Systems.
“Our Showcase on Aging is one of the largest in the country.
It was patterned after a major senior event someone saw in
Florida,” she says.
“People in their 50s are going to gather information for them-
selves and possibly for an older parent. Generally, we’ve found
it’s a middle-aged daughter in her 50s caring for a parent in his
80s. And she’s bringing her parent with her," she says.
Joanne Lentz, a 53-year-old Sharpstown resident, took her 88-
year-old mother to the Showcase last year. “We liked it for the
simple fact that there was a lot of free testing I couldn’t get Mom
to do.
“She felt the testing was a waste of money," says Lentz. “But
when she saw other people like her at the Showcase testing and it
was free, it made it o.k.,” she adds.
“They like being the center of attention and so she loved having
her photograph taken," says Lentz..
Lentz was also concerned about her mothers glucose. “If Mom
cats too many sweets, she gets a little dizzy,” she says. Testing
indicated her mother’s glucose count was normal.
