One of the few benefits of living in Houston instead of Bellaire
is that one can shop in the stores without having to smell and
breathe someone else’s cigarette or cigar smoke. What a blessing.

Spring Cleanup in Bellaire Next Two Weekends
The City of Bellaire is hosting a Spring Clean Up Drive. Now is the chance to
clean out your closets, garage and yard. Crews from the Solid Waste Division will
pick up everthing (with the exception of building materials, brick, cement and tree
limbs longer than four feet). Pickup will be SATURDAY, APRIL 28 for those
residents with regular pickup on Mondays, and SATURDAY, MAY 5 for those
with regular garbage pickup on Thursdays.
Barbara Adair, your regular colum-
nist, was off to her fortieth-year col-
lege reunion at Texas Womens Uni-
versity (Class of ’50) the weekend of
April 21, so yours truly has the honor
of filling in as guest columnist, NOT

The Volvo 240 costs very
little for a car that offers so much.
Particularly in the area of safety.
For example, the 240 is equipped with a
steel “safety cage” that surrounds and helps pro-
tect the passengers. And for added protection,
there are specially designed “crumple
zones" both front and rear.
Along with being designed for safety,
the 240 is designed to last. We know of
one Volvo on the road today that has logged
well over one million miles.
So stop in and
look at a 240 today.

Texas Agricultural and Mechanical
College ( of course, now known as
Texas A&M University). She was the
Tessie’ and I was the ‘Aggie’, who
combined the best of both worlds in
September 1950, producing as off-
spring of that marriage, two Aggies
and two Longhorns. You wouldn’t
believe the number of 600 mile hitch-
hiking weekend round trips I made
between College Station and Denton
from 1948-50 (Well, maybe you
would) in the days when most college
kids didn’t own, or even have, cars.
We even had designated Aggie hitch-
hiking line ‘stations’ in the major
Texas cities. In those days, thumbing
a ride as an Aggie in a ROTC uniform
was practically a cinch, though the
elapsed-time schedules were subject
to wide variations, as you can imagine.
Those were great times, but there were
times of dragging in to College Station
at class time Monday morning, pooped
after an all night stint on the road.
While she was in Denton, I partici
paled in Texas A&M’s annual Muster
held April 21st. At Aggie Musters
held world wide, we pause to remem
ber those former studenLs and class
mates who have passed on during the
year, and honor our beloved school.
One of my most memorable was in
Tokyo, during 1947, where I served
with the 5250thTechnical Intelligence
Corps in the post-war occupation of
Japan. There at the Muster, generals
and privates and those in between were
ranked the same, in camaraderie.
Meanwhile, back in Mcycrland,
THE MEYERLAND CLUB contin-
ues it’s April ‘Spring Fling’ with open
house every weekend. These activi-
ties are for everyone, and is not con-
fined to Mcycrland. On the weekend
of April 28-29, in addition, there will
be a Tennis Clinic by PAT BROWN,
Assistant Men’s Tennis Coach at Rice
University, for Juniors and Adults.
Call 666-0201 for times and details.
Also, JOHN WRIGHT, of Wright
Brothers Bicycle Company, will have
a free Bicycle Workshop at the Club,
covering training, equipment, road
repairs and safety, beginning 4:00 p.
m. Saturday. Stay tuned for details
and further news about John’s upcom-
ing “50 in 50 days’’ bicycle special
event. Remember, you heard about it
here first.
During the week of April 22-29,
artist-teacher,CAROLYN
S AMFORD, will exhibit her oil paint-
ings at the Mcycrland Club, for the
viewing of all of you wishing to see
this award-winning artist’s fine work,
from 10 am - 6 PM. Her specialty is
“Personality Portraits” of children.
Please go by; savor the brilliant colors
and enjoy these original oils.
Sunday, April 29, is SPLASH DAY
at the Mcycrland Club, with free hot
dogs, watermelon and games for all
ages, from 11 AM to 3 PM. If you sign
up for a Family Summer Membership,
your entire family may join in the
Splash Day fun. Drawing for Door
Prizes is at 2 PM. Be there and WIN!
Mcycrlanders have long been at the
forefront of planting and beautifying,
heeding calls to the aspirations of the
Greening of America, and activities
typifying Earth Day. During the past
few weeks in our subdivision, land-
scaping, tree trimming, and lawn revi-
talization by friends and neighbors has
exemplified our goals of maintaining
close harmony of nature with urban
living, in this architecturally-planned,
well-groomed family subdivision.
Thank you!
As we said back in my old home
town, Lamcsa, in the Panhandle of
West Texas, “See you in the funnies’’.

Question of the Week: I'm hungry all the time. What can I do?
Answer: Join the crowd! Be sure you always keep a bowl of
chopped fruit (apples, oranges, grapes, raisias, ets.)
in the fridge at all times. Carry nutritious snacks
(popcorn, raisins) with you so you never get raven-
ous. Remember, 6 small meals a day arc better for
you to Keep Moving.
