Students hear seminar on rape
Library extends its
hours to midnight
by Ray C. Brooks
The West Library has extended
its hours to midnight on Tues-
day, Wednesday, and Thursday
for a survey to sec how many
students will use the library at
those hours.
On Oct. 25, the extended
hours began. The hours will con-
tinue until Nov. 3. On the
evenings of the extended hours,
beginning at 6 00 p.m. the library
staff will periodically count the
number of people who arc using
the facilities, so they can chart
the library's usage If usage is
good, the library’s dean, Douglas
Ferrier, will request to have his
staff increased to accomodate
the longer hours.
There is no magic number of
people that will convince Ferrier
to have the hours increased.
These hours will serve as a study.
The goal is to see if usage drops
substantially after 10 p.m.
“If we have 35 to 40 people
at eight and about the same
number at 11, then we don’t
(have a significant drop),” said
Ferrier.
The count will not determine
what the students arc doing; it
will merely be a head count. The
number of students in the library
will be all that is counted. The
number of books checked out or
reference books used will not be
a factor.
The Library Committee re-
quested that the survey be done
after the Student Life Commit-
tee suggested it. John Casey,
President of the Student Govern-
ment Association, said that one
of the reasons Student Life sug-
gested it was for the convenience
of night students. Students at-
tending only at night currently
have only 30 minutes to use the
library after classes.
Jean Turner, chairman of the
Library Committee, said the com-

One in three women and one
in seven men will be a victim
of rape or attempted rape, Susan
Loving-Harris and Stacey Stover
of the Rape Crisis Center inform-
ed a group of almost 70 students.
They gathered in Stella Russell
lounge last Wednesday night.
Student Activities sponsored the
program so students could be
informed about rape and rape
prevention.
"Violence is not only defined
as physical aggression," Lov-
ing Harris said. “Violence is also
threats of violence. Everyone's
perception of violence is differ-
ent."
Rape is not a sexual act. Rape
is an act of violence. The group
defined rape as any form of
sexual activity against someone's
will.
"Sexual assault is the official
term for rape,” Loving-
Harris said. “Ten years ago, rape
used to be a bad word."
She said that rape was some
thing that was not spoken about
If a woman got raped, it was too
bad. She should have been more
careful. People believed that a
rape victim brought it upon
themselves. No one voices their
disgust that women get raped.
“The rapist," she said, "has a
deviant sexual arousal when
faced with power and control.
His needs are met in inappro-
priate ways.
"A rapist, from the time he's
18 to when he's 35, will have
had 45 to 55 victims." Eighty-
five percent of the victims, she
said, are never physically hurt.
The rapist may or may not have
a gun.

Lady Rams fall short
in Cowtown tourney
by Sean M. Wood
The volleyball team came close.
Close doesn't mean much when
it is the tournament you are
hosting and expecting to win.
Last weekend the Spikers hosted
the Wesleyan Invitational tourna-
ment and were looking to win it
all. A team from Alabama had
other ideas.
The Lady Rams' first match
was against the Lady Stags of
Concordia Luthern. The Spikers
made short work of Concordia,
winning 15-3, 15-3.
"We had some mistakes," said
Coach Becky Hughes. “We had
some problems with our transi-
tion game. We have to react to
the block and be ready to hit."
Texas Wesleyan's next oppon-
ent that Friday was the Lady
Falcons of Montvallo University
in Alabama. The Lady Falcons
had just lost a hard-fought match
to Southwestern University.
The Lady Falcons proved to be
a tough competitor. The Spikers
fought to take game one 15-11.
In game two, the Lady Rams
lost 16-14. The Spikers pulled
away to win game three 16-14.
"We did well and then let
down,” Hughes said. "We put
pressure on ourselves. It's a
mental thing. We quit serving
hard and tried to be careful. We
have to use our big hitters. We
have to move them around. They
are our key people."
“We lost our passing,” Donna
Higginbotham said. “We had a
lot naiscommunication. We stop-
ped going full force. We tried to
outsmart the other team and
started 'dinking' the ball. We
have to keep hitting and keep
hitting."
The next match was against
rivals Southwestern. The Lady
Bucs were again looking to take
out the Spikers. They played a
tough match forcing the Lady

ris said, “Whatever you do to
survive is the right thing.”
According to Loving-Har-
ris, when men are raped, they
lose their gender identity. They
call their masculinity into ques-
tion. When women are raped,
they may feel as if they are at
fault.
"Rape is the fault of the of-
fender," she said. "When a wom-
an says no, she means no. Against
her will is against the law. The
guy with the bad behavior is
the one with the problem."
Loving-Harris said there is
no such thing as prevention.
There are precautions that can
be taken. “You have to police
your own campus,” she said.
“Take advantage of the APO es-
cort service. Get organized and
get involved.
“We are already affected by
rape," she added. “Even if we
haven’t been assaulted — we live
in fear.”
Water leak in library
causes minor damage
by Bill Day
Only minor damage was caused
by a water leak in the West
Library early Sunday morning. A
sprinkler system that was acti-
vated by last Monday's electrical
fire began to leak in the library’s
attic and came through the ceil-
ing into the west stairwell.
“We were extremely fortu-
nate," said Doug Ferrier, dean
of the library. According to him,
the sprinkler system in the attic
is called a “dry system” and only
has water pumped into it in case
of an emergency.
"Since the attic is not air con-
ditioned or heated, we use the
dry system,” said Ferrier. “When
the alarm went off last week,
the mechanism got tripped and
water was pumped into the sys-
tem."
Although the sprinklers didn't
go off, said Ferrier, the me-
chanism itself started dripping.
Ferrier said the water triggered
an alarm Sunday morning and
the fire department was called
to check the building. They
found the damage.
According to Ferrier, three or
four ceiling tiles in the stairwell
will have to be replaced because
of water damage. The only part
of the main library that received
any water damage was the rug
directly in front of the entrance
of the third floor stairwell.
Ferrier said that the leak in
the sprinkler mechanism had
been cut off by Sunday morning.
