To understand much of
what we're doing with
respect to cancer research,
you'd need a graduate
degree in microbiology or
biochemistry.
But to understand how
well our educational
programs and service
resources help both
patients and their families,
simply talk to one out of
every 100 Americans w ho
are part of our volunteer
program. Or talk to one of
the 3 million who’ve
survived cancer.
The battle isn't over but
we are winning.

Finishing one shot away from
2nd in the nation, Wesleyan
linksters hope that destiny will
shine its face and bring a na-
tional championship to Bobby
Cornett’s Rams. Wesleyan will
have a stellar group of players
including standouts Eion Leggat
and Richard Backwell, who rep-
resented his native Australia in
Junior World Cup play.
What hurt Wesleyan in the
National championships last year
was that perennial NAIA power
Huntingdon College (Ala.) host-
ed the tournament and eventual-
ly won the national champion-
ship. This year, Coach Cornett
is excited since nationals will be
held in Saginaw, Michigan. Wes-
leyan will be trying to unseat
Huntingdon who has captured
the last four national crowns.
But before embarking on na
tiona! pursuits, the Rams must
take care of business at home,
namely Dis'rict Four. ‘There is
no doubt in my mind that we
have a stronger team than last
year," said Cornett. “We just
have to take one step at a time.”
Helping to lead those steps will be
players like Anthony Castellaro
and Charlie Claffey who both ex-

celled on the greens and in the

American.
Last year was an up and
down year for Cornett's squad
but they managed to win the
district and move on to national
competiion. Cornett looks to do
the same this year. “We have a
pretty extensive schedule. We
try and play in the best tourna-
ments and against the toughest
competition.” The Rams will go
up agains Texas Tech, Colorado,
Air Force, New Mexico and
NCAA champion UCLA in their
tournaments.
Another highlight this year for
TWC golf will be hosting the
0. D. Bounds Intercollegiate
Tournament. Bounds was Wes-
leyan golf coach for 39 years
before being the first coach
named into the NAIA Golf Hall
of Fame. Eighteen teams will be
there including Huntingdon.
Cornett remains confident
about this year's team. And con-
fidence can be rendered in the
fact that four out of five na-
tional players will return.
"I think we can win the na-
tional championship, it remains
to be seen if we will. We have
the talet.” Maybe the talent will
breed a much needed national
championship for Texas Wes-
leyan College.

The volleyball team has a goal
this year Their goal is the same
as last year. They want to win
Nationals.
"Everyone is looking for first
this year," said volleyball coach
Becky Hughes "They know they
can compete with anybody."
Hughes lost two starters to
graduation. "We’ve got four
starters returning and two in-
experienced people coming in,"
Hughes said. "We should have
good depth.”
Returning starters are sopho-
more Stephanie Mcl.aughlin, sen-
iors Donna Higginbotham, Col-
leen Ford and All-American
Ginger Klopfcnstein.
Hughes has brought two set-
ters and three hitters into the
program this year.
"We recruited well," Ford said.
“We’ve got two good setters,
two good outside hitters and a
strong inside hitter.”
Strength is needed if the team
hopes to make its third consecu-
tive trip to Nationals.
“Inexperience is one of our
problems," Ford said. “We have

four starters and two positions
that need to be filled. Those arc
some tough shoes to fill.”
"I’ve seen some good things,"
Hughes said. "We need to keep
an aggressive attitude. Our hit-
ting is strong but we need to
work on our service receiving
and passes." •
“We have a good chance to
make the final four," Higgin-
botham said. “We want to be
number one. We have unity on
the court. There arc four re-
turning starters who seem to
work well together. All the hit-
ters we recruited arc strong."
Klopfcnstein holds a personal,
as well as team goal. She would
like to be All American again.
“I want to do it again,” she
said. “I also want to win Na-
tionals. I've never been on a na-
tional championship team. That
would be the best way to end
my college career.”
The Lady Rams recently parti-
cipated in a tournament in
Fresno, Calif. They met oppon-
ents they would see at Nationals.
They finished fourth.
