Men close regular season with win
as much as possible, as long as
we don't have a problem with
injuries.
“Our breaking pitches and
split finger worked well. (Pitch-
er Jeff) Wood finished strong,"
Bass continued, "Tliey’re a great
bunch of guys — you’ve got to
love ’em.”
Bass was less positive after
Saturday’s double header against
Southeast Oklahoma, a nationally
ranked team. The Rams lost the
first game 11-8 and the second
game was called because of dark-
ness in the seventh inning with
the score tied at 7-7.
"We watched the ball lie in
the infield and dropped it once
in the outfield, among other mis-
takes. It was like a saying my
dad used to have, ‘If you play

Imagine a dapper Coach
Charles Jolley dressed in athletic
regalia sans the usual coat and
tie, and sporting coaches shirt,
sweat pants and sneakers. Very
unusual you might say. Then
again, last Wednesday's encoun-
ter with Texas Lutheran College
was anything but usual.
The Bulldogs were fighting
for a playoff Bpot. Even Jolley
had something good to say about
them when he said, "They’re not
an easy team. It's going to be a
tough one.’ 'And indeed it was.
The Rams seemingly had to be
coaxed from their lull of sleep
before they managed to say
goodnight to the third best team
in the conference, 91-87.
Maybe the Rammies were
thinking of bigger and better
things as the national anthem
blared from the Ram Band.
After all this was the last regu-
lar season game and Wesleyan
had already clinched that coveted
playoff spot. Regardless, the
Rams picked up the first two
buckets of the game, the last
coming on a Brad Simmons
jumper But after that it was
Ramballers beat Briarcliffe
downright sloppy at both ends
of the floor. The Rams had a six
point lead at one point in the
first half thanks largely In part
to Anthony Armstrong, who
finished with 19 first half points.
The Bulldogs barked back with
11 unanswered points to take a
five point lead of their own.
With 7:43 remaining Wesleyan
regained the lead when Javc Mc-
Caskill hit two shots in a row.
McCaskill had a fine perform-
ance as his perimeter shot fell
all night and he finished with
12. But the Rams were having
problems with getting the right
combination out on the floor. It
was probably Jolley tuning them
up for the playoffs. Another
dilemma was the fact that the
Rams hadn’t faced a team, out-
side of St. Mary's, that has been
capable in both speed and size.
TLC quick-handed their way
back to take a three point lead
at the half 54-91.
At times it looked as If the
Bulldogs brought their student
body to Fort Worth. TLC sub-
stituted as many as five players
at a time and used 14 of their
17 listed players. But in true
Rammie blue and gold mystique
Wesleyan became a different
team in the second half. With
14:04 remaining Jeff Kalbfliesch
scored on an assistant from Rod
Gordon to tie the score. Gordon,
who finished with 19 points, nine
rebounds and six assists, gave
the Rams the lead penetrating
the lane and making It 68-66
Rams. Wesleyan increased their
lead to as many as 11, when
McCaskill hit two charity strip-
ers. The Bulldogs fought their
way back to trail by two only
to have the four comers and two
Kalbfleisch free throws seal
their fate.
The final: Rammies 91, Bull-
dogs 87. Kind of close, but hey,
no sweat, right coach.

Due to rain last week Adams
field was too wet to play on
until Friday when the Rams
faced Briarcliffe Junior College
of Iowa. Wednesday's scheduled
game against Southwestern will
have to be made up at a later
date.
Briarcliffe was defeated 7-2 in
the first game and the second
game was called in the fifth in-
ning by the 10 run rule when
the score reached 14-3. Michael
Esparza pitched the entire first
game and Philip Irby was cred-
ited with his first college win at
Wesleyan after starting on the
mound for the second game.
Outfielder Tim Deery had a
good first game with a home run
and a single from his two at
bats for a total of three RBIs.
Catcher Matthew Langford also
bad a two run home run.
Steve Briere got on base four
of his five times at bat during
the two games. "It was a fun
game for everybody. As a team
we played excellent. We were
up for it — we came back home
and did what we were supposed
to do. Everybody contributed;
that’s what makes it fun,” said
Briere.
In the second game Stevie
Houghton and Scott Thoma both
had three RBIs and Kurt Dow
hit a three run homer.
"It was fun to be home," said
Coach Brad Bass. “We worked
hard and pulled it together. I
used guys in different situations,
left handed batters, against right
handed pitchers and vice versa.
I’d like to continue to do that

bad you're bound to lose,’ ” said
Bass,
The first game started out well
for the Rams with five runs in
the first inning, including a three
run home run from Briere.
Things went downhill from there.
"It was good to hit a winning
note against Briarcliffe. R feels
so good to win at home. But
whether I play well or not I give
all credit to the Lord,” com-
mented Dow on the weekend’s
games.
The tie between Wesleyan and
Southeastern Oklahoma will be
settled when the Rams travel
to Oklahoma over spring break.
