portunity to display some of their
best works at the annual Faculty
Art Exhibition in Gallery 13 of
the art building
Works of art in vibrant hues
and haunting pastels ranging
from multimedia pieces to bright-
ly colored ceramics encircle the
room.
Watcrcolorcd landscapes, an
oil painting of a table setting, a
pencil conte' drawing and a
monotype entitled "Image After
ltcinbrantdt" are on display by
Turner Turner, who studied at
the University of Colorado at
Boulder. Columbia University
and Southern Methodist Univer-
sity, cites artist Otis Dozier, an
"old-time regionalist" whom she
studied under in Dallas, as a ma
jor influence in her work.
“I like drawing as much as
anything," says Turner. "Paint-
ing takes a dedication that I don't
have the time for.”
In addition to her art works.
Turner exhibits her literary
finesse with articles in ART +
ARCHITECTURE and the Atha
nor IV — Florida State Univer-
sity Journal, which are on dis-
play as well.

Splashes of pinks, blues and
golds inhabit her works that in-
corporate much detail and vari-
ous levels of difficulty.
Some of the most eye-catching
works on display belong to Sum-
mers, whose ceramics embody
bright colors patterned intri-
cately. Summers used an ancient
16th Century Japanese form of
firing pottery known as Raku,
which involves a multitude of
chemical reactions in which
“timing is critical" to form the
crackles in the pottery’s sur-
face. To develop the colorful de-
signs, she taped off areas and
painted on the low-fire glazes.
A former student of the Pre-
toria Art School in South Africa,
Summers has been creating cera-
mics for almost a decade. She be-
came interested in ceramics
while in art school, where she
was a student of graphic arts.

"I was playing Scruples with
my wife the other night and I
got the card that asked: If you
smoked marijuana in the past,
would you tell your children? I
said, ‘No,1 and my wife said to
me, 'You’d better tell them.’ And
as I thought about it, I realized
she was right. I think you have
to tell them.
“You have to honor your kids,
and build up their resjpect, and
then give it back to them.
“I was talking to some high
school kids and they asked
about (Mets pitcher) Dwight
Gooden (who went into a co-

year). I asked how many of them
felt they could handle the pres-
sure he was under. I told the
kids that raised their hands they
didn't know what they were say-

couldn't have handled driving in

"I had never spoken to Dwight
in my life. On the Mets first trip
to Wrigley Field after his re-
lease we (the Cubs) were leav-
ing the field when I saw Dwight
walking my direction. I said to
myself, 'Is he walking towards
me?'
"Sure enough. He came to me
and I said, 'How's it goin’?’
"He said, ‘All right. How are
you doin'?'
“ 'Pretty good,’ I said. ‘I'm pull-

"He said, ‘Thanks. I’m pulling
for you too,’ or something like
that. But it made me feel real
good that he would come over
like that."
