Rams squeak by I.W. in 82-80 victory
by Michael Kwai

the TWO eniier's victory Inst
Saturday at the hands of Incar-
nate Word Calient, UGLY. How-
ever truthful this might be, a
win is a win; and these days
that's good The Kainmies have
been able to pull together and
string a few victories together,

five. And this 8280 nail-biter
was a God send
Take a look at the big picture
and you'll find 50, count ’em, 50
(personal 'fouls called by the
much maligned officials.
Rod Gordon got the Rams
under way with the first points
of the game. Gordon had an-
other stellar performance with
15 points, hitting 6-8 from the
field and adding three steals.
But the real story of the game
was Jeff Kalbfleisch. The junior
from Hurst is coming into his
own as a consistent scorer and
team leader. At one point in the

Saturday night the Lady Rams
accomplished what they had
been trying to do for the last
two and a half weeks — win a
ball game. Gone like Joseph Bi-
den’s presidential campaign was
the six game losing streak the
Ladies dragged into the Sid W.

Perenial scoring leader, Susan
Siegmund led all scorers again
with 29 points. Jill Edwards

The girls may have been com-
municating, but coach was keep-
ing quiet about her plans. Taking
a turn away from traditional Ram
ball play, Palmer made not one
substitution until less than six
minutes remained in the first
half. Palmer said she had made
the decision to go with the start-
ers as long as they were effective
and didn't show fatigue.
Siegmund said the team was
unaware of Palmer’s deviation
from tho machine norm. “She

TWC coach Beth Palmer was
happy to pick up the win. How-
ever, the win itself wasn’t the
main source of reinforcement,
but how the team played.
“We had an excellent game.
The reason we played so well
can be attributed to the girls
communicating with each other,"
just told us to relax anil go play
like we can.” Having four play
ers in double figures showed
that the strategy paid off "That
was the key to the game," cited
Palmer.
The freshman from Waukrr.
Iowa got particular notice "Ste
phanie McLaughlin really came
around Saturday," said Palmer
“The thing she does is get In
there and score points quickly "

for seven consecutive points, giv-
ing the Rams a 28 27 lead with
6:00 remaining. Kish led all
scorers with 24 17-11 from the

But the sloppy play of the Rams
combined with tho power game
of Incarnate Word kept the visi-
tors in the game. It's not that
the Incarnate Word was shooting

Part of the Rammics’ problem
in the first half was that Gordon
was sitting on the bench, a re
cipient of two quick and some

less to say. the Ram dynamic duo
oi Gordon and Hndell Smith was
running at half throttle without
Gordon. The duo-guard tandem
has given the Hams the punch
they need for the running game
and has provided Instant of
fense.
The second half looked as if
the Rammics would be on their
way to a blowout. Jave McCaskill

cut to seven. But Gordon pene-

yet again It was wasted oppor-
tunities and three consecutive
turnovers that enabled Word to
cut the lead to a solitary point

Wesleyan employed a four cor-
