MAINTENANCE
DEPARTMENT
BACKED CP
ENQUIRING MIHOS BOCCO and fOffiR
By Matthew T. Brown
Reporter
It seems that everyone at
Wesleyan has voiced some com-
plaint over problems with its fa-
cilities. These include complaints
about parking lots, buildings that
need to be painted, as well as
other problems that need atten-
tion.
Students and faculty may be
surprised that a list of these and
several other problems ex ists and
is in the possession of the main-
tenance department. Actually, it
is the maintenancedepartmcnt that
has compiled this list.
The section of Avenue B
between Wesleyan and Collard
streets was donated to the uni-
versity several years ago, ac-
cording to head of maintenance,
Ronnie Irvin. “Avenue B needs
to be completely dug up and re-
placed,” said Irvin.
The maintenance department
routinely patches up holes in
Avenue B as well as the parking
lots. The fact is that there is
simply not enough funds allocated
to fix such problems.
The university has a history
of waiting to fix things. Several
years ago, the gym floor was in
such bad shape that athletes were
injuring themselves. Finally, the
university scraped enough funds
together to remedy the situation.
The maintenance department
routinely takes pictures of prob-
lems to present to John Ratliff
(VP of Finance) and the board of
trustees. This was done several
years ago when the swimming
pool in the Sid Richardson Center
needed to be replaced. Irvin ex-
plained that certain places, such
as underneath the floor in the pool
area, were hard to reach. For this
reason, it would be difficult for
the trustees to view. Pictures were
taken of these areas in order that
the trustees could see the prob-
lems.
The pool was finally refur-
bished. According to Irvin, “the
only thing that wasn’t new was
the hole.” However, the univer-
sity waited to the point that if the
pool was not repaired, it would
have had to close.
It is true that it is not cheap to
repair facilities. It cost approxi-
mately $100,000 to fix the pool.
About $200,000was used to repair
the gym floor. The cost of re-
placing three chillers cost the
universityaround$200,000. And,
with 26 buildings on campus,
upkeep is an expensive operation.
When asked who grants the
money for such undertakings,
Ratliff only offered the university

and the Board of Trustees.
According to Irvin, there arc
building supervisors for all of the
universities facilities. If a repair
needs to be made, these people
should be contacted first. This is
more efficient in that people who
use the buildings on a daily basis
arc more aware of problems than
the maintenance staff. “Iliscasicr
for staff who lives in a building to
be aware of the problems," said
Irvin.
Upkeep is not the only re-
sponsibility of Irvin who also
keeps a list of suggested major
undertakings of the university
includingaHumaniticsCcnterand
renovation of the Fine Arts Au-
ditorium and the Art Complex.
It is clear that in order lo
improve the campus of Texas
Wesleyan, more funds must be
found, either through increased
tuition or gifts to the university.
