Message for
the Week
By Dwight Brown
Rice Avenue Church of
Christ
Jesus said in John
13:15-17, “I have set
you an example that you
should do as I have done
for you. I tell you the
truth, no servant is
greater than his master,
nor is a messenger
greater than the one
who sent him. Now that
you know these things,
you will be blessed if
you do them."
The great example
that Jesus gave His
disciples was that He
came to serve and not to
be served. The great
promise He gave is that
if we follow in His steps,
we will have the
opportunity to grow
spiritually and be
blessed by Him who
loves us. We will learn
the love of the Lord by
what we do in His
service. The Hebrew
writer points this out*
about our Lord in
Hebrews 5:8.
"Although He was a
son, He learned
obedience from what He
suffered and, once made
perfect He became the
source of eternal sal-
vation for all who obey
Him."
Never turn down the
opportunity to serve the
Lord and to honor His
name by your testimony
of what He has done for
you. God will bless you
and strengthen you with
His love.
WORDS FROM WILSON
I was lazy last week
and didn't write a
column. So I'm sharing
wisdom from Sloan
Wilson, author of “The
Man In The Gray
Flannel Suit.” These
items are from an article
he wrote, “Things I
learned in a half century
of living.”
1 Liquid shoe polish
doesn’t work.
2 A man who wants
time to read and write
must let the grass grow
long-
3 Beware of people
who are always well-
dressed.
4 The hardest part of
raising children is
teaching them to ride
bicycles. A father can
run beside the bicycle or
stand yelling directions
while the child falls. A
shaky child on a bicycle
for the first time needs
both support and
freedom. The realization
that this is what the
child will always need
can hit hard.
5 It’s impossible to
treat a child too well.
Children are spoiled by
being ignored too much
or by harshness, not by
kindness. Rich kids are
often spoiled not by
their toys and auto-
mobiles, but by parents
who are too busy to pay
much attention to them.
6 It is impossible to
treat a woman too well.
7 It is impossible for a
woman to treat me too
well.
8 The definition of a
beautiful woman is one
who loves me.
9 Children go away
and live their own lives,
starting when they are
about 18. Parents who
accept this as a natural
part of the order of
things will see their
grown children surpris-
ingly often.
10 Friends are fun,
but they are more
dangerous than stran-
gers. Strangers ask for a
quarter for a cup of
coffee, while friends ask
for a thousand dollars,
no questions asked if
you’re a real friend.
Some friends also have a
roving eye for your wife
and your daughters.
11 Success in almost
any field depends more
on energy and drive
than it does on intel-
ligence. This explains
why we have so many
stupid leaders.
12 One way to teach
children some hard
truths about alcohol is to
drink too much. None of
my four children drinks
and the reason, my
eldest daughter reports,
is that I taught them to
hate the smell of the
stuff. No one can say my
youth was wasted.
13 The national bird of
the United States should
be the sparrow. Spar-
rows are proliferating all
over the place, while the
eagle is an endangered
species. I for one don’t
want my country sym-
bolized by a fierce loser.
14 Despite all the
advice about how to
achieve connubial bliss,
a happy marriage is
usually an unearned
miracle. The reasons
why some people get on
so well together are as
mysterious as the
reasons why other
people fight.
15 It is impossible to
lose weight lastingly and
all diets are atrocious.
16 Either afloat or
ashore, it is normal for
everything to go wrong.
No one should ever be
surprised or unduly
upset by foul-ups. They
are a basic part of the
human condition.
17 Many children
should be treated as
adults and many adults
must be treated as
children. Age has very
little to do with capabili-
ties.
