Many of you who travel our
rural road system are familiar
with our Improvement program.
The following is a brief state-
ment from actual records,
showing some of our accomp-
lishments:
1. Complete highway 59, a
distance of 3.9 miles.
2. Complete farm to market
road 129, a distance of 5.4 miles.
3'. Have approval with money
appropriated on farm to market
road 1758, a distance of 5.6
miles.
4. Have recommended to the
State highway department
three more farm to market
roads leading into Bowie and
Sunset. I have reason to be-
lieve that under ,good sound
business management a part or
all will be granted.
5. Have hauled 31,548 loads
of gravel and crushed rock to
date. Surface attention being
given just to school bus and
mail routes.
6. Have kept 30 and 40 miles
of rural roads oiled. A new ser-
vice rendered until more per-
manent improvements can be
made. This has done much in
keeping our farmers and oil
field workers out of the mud.
7. Have installed 406 rein-
forced concrete and metal cul-
verts, many of them replacing
old wooden bridges of a danger-
ous condition. Others were nec-
essary for proper draining after
grading was accomplished.
8. Have constructed seven
modern steel bridges, the lar-
gest being 120 feet long and the
smallest being 20 feet long
These bridges were built under
the supervision of Howard Mid-
leton and plans were drawn up
by him. They have a total of'
262,000 pounds of steel in them j
The guaranteed strength, based1
on manufacturers specification1
is 75,000 pounds. These replaced
old structures that would carry
only 5,000 to 8,000 pounds. Some'
of which collapsed with loads of I
no more than the above men-!
tioned figures before I had time j
to get the new bridges erected.
9. Have acquired new right
of way on many miles of third
class county roads, widening
them and grading and draining!
them into first class county
roads.
10. All of these improvements
have been accomplished plus
machinery up-keep and re-
placements without additional
regular road maintenance,
taxes or increased indebtedness.
I am aware that much of this
could not have been done with
out your cooperation and God’s
favor, for both I am deeply’
thankful.
In closing my statement to
you humbly I beg that you, the
voting public, accept not politi-
cal falsehoods or hearsay, but
face the Issues clearly and with
ait. Open mind. Investigate your
candidate, Inspect his work, and
choose wisely. Do this and you
will have good clean, and honest
government.
Thank you,
Howard Middleton.
