Marlin sluggers second in Refugio
tourney: 'we finally have a team'
Port Aransas High School Marlins
baseball players came in second in
the Refugio Tournament when they
played San Diego Friday, March 16.
Alex Young was winning pitcher
and Winston Caraker was catcher
in the 7-6 game.
Young, one for four, had a long
hit that brought in two runs.
J.L Gibbs was two for four, scor-
ing twice on his double and a single.
Will Ulch, who scored twice, was
walked two times. Caraker’s double
drove in two runs. He scored twice.
Jeremy Staggs and Danny
Peterson, both of whom were on
base twice, each scored once.
“We played real well on defense,
only committing one error, which
gave up three unearned runs,” said
Coach Steve Reaves. “Alex pitched
an excellent game, scattering nine
hits over seven innings while strik-
ing out seven and walking four.”
Ulch came in to get the last out
in the seventh.
Andy Davidson and Evan Talley
both made excellent plays to get the
last out in the game. Each scored
once.
the year when they faced Pettus ear-
lier in the day in the tournament
making a score of 5-4.
Young was on base four times and
scored two runs. He had one RBI.
Ulch pitched and Caraker caught.
Ulch, with three RBIs, was on
base two out of three times at bat.
Gibbs, with the other RBI, “hit the
ball hard again and had one double,”
Reaves said.
Kevin Hall scored one of the runs
and Zack Holcomb, another of the
runs. He played well, the coach said,
making it on base all three times
with a single, double and a walk.
Peterson was walked twice and
Andy Davidson played well in the
field, Reaves said, “making several
nice plays.”
In this game, Reaves said, “We
gave up four unearned runs in the
first two innings and then settled
down to play well.”
The Marlins tied up the game in
the fifth with a three run single by
Ulch.
“We took the lad in the sixth in-
ning," Reaves said, “when Young
walked to bring in the winning run.
Ulch pitched an excellent game giv-
ing up one hit and no earned runs.
He struck out nine and walked two.”
“It finally looked like we had a
baseball team," the coach said.
The team lost a heart breaker to
host Refugio on Wednesday, March
15, with a score of 3-19.
Talley pitched and Bryant Harris
caught.
“It was evident we took five days
off for Spring Break," Reaves said.
We were not very sharp at the plate
or in the field. We gave up 10 un-
earned runs and 10 walks to take
ourselves out of the game early.”
Young was on base twice and drove
in one run while Ulch made it to
base two times and scored two runs.
Gibbs hit the ball hard, making two
doubles. He also drove in one run.
Holcomb walked his only time at
bat and Harris scored one run. Hall
and Peterson both walked once.
“We needed the wins to give us
momentum going into district. We
went two for three in the tourna-
ment, finishing second.,” Reaves said.
Ulch and Gibbs made the all-tour-
ney team.
The Marlins played a district game
at home Tuesday, March 20, against
Kenedy.
