Both Palmer will take her Lady
Rams in her third go round this
year with a "take no prisoners”
attitude After last year’s some
what disappointing finish (15 15).
Palmer and Co. should pull the
reigns and go for the jugular in
reaching the top of The Heart
of Texas Conference. That’s if
the ladies are not permanent
residents at one of Fort Worth’s
finest infirmaries Last years
Lady Rams were belittled by in-
juries.
This year Coach Palmer hopes
to put the glue on and put the
team back together. The key to
this team starts in the backcourt
where Dana Dietrich and Heidi
Harville should prove to be quite
explosive.
“Both have defined their roles
better as guards and I’m really
looking forward to seeing them
play," said Palmer Both Dietrich
and Harville will split time at the
point and off guard positions. This
is the second year together for
the pair, so the backcourt should
be solid.
The main attraction this year
will be Teresa Loving. “She has
the potential to be very domi-
nating,” said Palmer. Indeed, the
5’9” senior forward from Ft.
Worth has the numbers. She’s
coming off a 13 points per game
season and averaged nine boards
a game as well.
"Michelle Cary is playing very
hard to work into the post posi-
tion," says Palmer Wesleyan will
be looking for big things from
this young sophomore "with a
big heart."
At the other starting forward
will be senior Jill Edwards The
transfer from Arizona is also in
her second season with the Rams,
"I foresee Jill doing very well
and having a better scoring year,"
said Palmer Jill's outside shot
has improved which should help
prevent last year’s woes on the
Wesleyan team, namely an end-
less game of Hot Potato (transla-
tion: nobody wanted to shoot the
ball). The starting five is formid-
able, but once again, if it stays
healthy.
The new kids on the block arc
headed by 5’4" guard sensation
Taffy Furtick. Furtick hails from
nearby Mansfield high school and
the freshman looks like she will
be an important part of the wom-
en's squad for years to come.
Juniors Georgia Sherrill and Ter-
ri Porter will both have a major
impact in January when they will
be eligible to play. Sherrill is
a 6’3" transfer from Arkansas
who will be filling in time at the
post. Porter, at 5’8", will be at
the forward position.
The Lady Rams have three
walk-ons this year as well in Vic-
toria Forrest, Nita Baker and
Michelle Torres. One cannot for-
get the punch added by Stephanie
McLaughlin and Coke Ford, who
will join the team at the conclu-
sion of volleyball Both came on
at the end of the season last year
and Palmer is excited about the
depth they will bring the team.
Palmer is making some
changes on the defensive end and
probably will employ more man-
to-man coverage and so far. the
defenses have run more effec-
tively. The Rams will get a
chance to test their defense with
nine games right off the block
this fall.
"This is a much tougher sched-
ule for us, but I think it is good
for us," said Palmer. The season
opens with Midwestern on the
19th and includes a stint in Flor-
ida.
Last year Coach Palmer added
10 new players and this year will
be the second year for many of
them. The questions remain: have
the ladies matured since last
year? Will Dietrich and Harville
be able to complement each oth-
er in the backcourt and be able
to reverse roles at times? Late
in the game, will the Rams be
able to get the ball in right
girls' hands to shoot it? And by
all means will this team stay
healthy. Coach Beth Palmer
seems to think so. And that might
just be good enough to get the
Rams a district championship.

was not to be. In game one,
Southwestern came out smoking.
They rolled to a 15-4 win. In
game two, the Spikers woke up
and made it respectable but lost
15-10.
It was do or die for the Lady
Rams. They came through in
game three, winning 15-11. In
game four, both teams refused
to give anything up. The Spikers
were able to carry off the hour-
long game, 19-17. That was it for
the night. Southwestern wrapped
up a Bi-district title match against
Midwestern State by winning
game five 15-8.
"We had a good warm-up,”
Hughes said. “We didn't play at
the level we should have. We
didn’t quit. We played tough.”
It is now up to the NAIA Na-
tionals Selection Committee. Tex-
as Wesleyan has a chance to re-
ceive an at-large bid of Nationals.
"The committee looks at the
total season," Hughes said. "They
look at the level of competition
you had and the district. We
went last year and they will look
at that. Hopefully they will see
that the two teams that went
from our district last year (Wes-
leyan and Southwestern) finish-
ed third and fourth. We'll know
Sunday at noon.”
