Trainmen Hunt Rabbits, a*'
The railroad men any that in the
Central Branch country the rabbits are
unusually numerous this winter and
that jackrabblts are more numerous
than for years.
The trainmen gat a chance to hunt
occaaionally on account of the poor
condition of the engines. Whenever
an engine goes wrong the trainmen
enter the fields and hunt rabbits.
When the engineer gets through
with the work of repairing the engine
he pulls the whistle cord, and then the
trainmen come back to the train and
resume their work on the road. At
Parnell last week one crew had time
to have a rabbit supper.—Kansas City

In addition to Its alien population,
bygone Stepney was credited with a
large number of the citizens of other
towns on account of the current no-
tion that all children bora at sea be-
longed to the parish of 8tepney, a no-
tion probably due to large number
of Bailors who lived there. Paupers
who had been bora at sea were grave-
ly sent to Stepney from all parts of
the country, and from time to time
the law courts had to be called upon
to decide against their claims.—Lon-

Tha Term Philosopher.
The word “philosopher” is said to
luive originated with the celebrated
Pythagoras, who was born about 570
B. C. The word means a lover of wis-
dom. Pythagoras must have been s
very rerantk.-tlile imiu. for It Is certain
that be made n profound and lusting
impression upon his time. He was
the originator of the Idea that nature
Is a harmony und that Its varied phe-
nomena are nil brought about by un-
erring and universal laws and are an
expression of nothing less than tbe
universe Itself. Trite to the name he
gave himself. Pythagoras Is said to
have devoted his whole life to the ac-
quisition of knowledge to (he end that
he might Impart It to others without
money anti without price. He was
one of the noble Influences of antiq-
uity, and the effects of his unselfish
labors are still visible among men.—

old fowls may be housed during the
winter.
For summer use, wire screens of
1-lnch mesh may be inserted In place
of windows. For winter use, muslin
may be tacked over one of the
screens and, with the glass window,
the fowl will do very well. The total
cost of this little bouse is $26.27.
Early Pullets.
Early pullets are the ones that lay
earileqt in the fall. Much, however,
depends upon the breed. The Leg-
horn and Its relatives may be hatched
later than our American varieties,
such as the Plymouth Rock, and those
later than the Brdhma and Cochin. As
soon as the chicks are able to run
about they ta&ve a scratching pen with
lots of litter In which to hunt for
feed. They are made to scratch for
a living from the very beginning.
Those that are vigorous, healthy and
well developed start laying during Oc-
tober or November.

Young Squabs.
A squab grows enormously the first
12 hours, and still more rapidly after
the third day. Squabs are at first
sparsely covered with long filaments
of down, the root of each filament In-
dicating tbe point from which each
future feather is to start. The down
for a while still hangs on the tips of
some of tbe feathers, during their
growth, and is thought by some to be
finally absorbed into the shaft of the
growing feather.
Clever for Hen*.
With plenty of clover, hens will re-
quire little other feed so long as tbe
clover lasts; but aa fowls are very
fond of this plant, they must be
moved from place to place, if their
numbers are very large, or the clover
will be eaten off too clean.
