The recent release of Pilcher gam
ka the past-
ing Of the last remnant of the old
Pittsburg team as It was made up be-
fore the consolidation of the Pirate*
and Louisville, when the National
league circuit was reduced from 12 to
8 club*. Until the season of 199T
brought a deal with Boatoa, Leaver
had one old comrade of the late 90's
in Clartace Beaumont, who was Busi-
ly let out bf fast company by Chicago.
Leaver's career hat been a remark-
able one, and Stowe the dU Pirate to
have been one Of the greatest pitcher*
In the history Of the gain*. For IS
toll seasons and part of flaotMf pen-
nant race he had been a member of
the Pittsburg team and until the flight
of time cut him down to etnergedey
roles, a few years ago, he always
ranked as on* of the most successful
siabmen in the ttdJors. Indeed, fiber*
is one feature to bis record that put
him In a class of his own, for he was
champion pitcher of tht National
league no less than than three timet—
1901, 1903 and 1905—while hie heme
also appeared at the ItyMd of the list
In two other years, though be did not
participate In a sufficient number of
games to earn the title of leader.
Leever, who le how thirty-eight
years of age, was secured by the Pitts-
burg club of the Atlantic league, W.
H. Watkins being then manager of
the plratee. Sam wae troubled with a
■ore arm and pitched only one game
that season, but the following year he
was back with bells on, and from that
time on ranked as one of the greatest
dingers In the business.
Since joining the Pittsburg team
Leever pitched a grand total of 299
games, and while this la hot As faudh
work as some other veteran heavers
have done, the records of few rivals
are to be compared with that of Lee-
ver in the all-important matter of
percentage of victories. Of those 290
games pitched, Leever won no less
that 193 contests, against only 97
lost, for the remarkable percentage of
.666.

CRIME LAMBASTED
Dr. l*rince Before the
Pythian* at Beaumont-
Thu following 1* takfcn from the
Beaumont Enterprise:
There was a Urge amount of busi-
ness transacted In yesterday'» •sh-
ale n of the grand lodge of the negro
Knights of Pythias in etoHfifi tftJL
Paul M. E. church, And strong ftob*
lutions were passed condemning
crime and criminate.
in calling the grand lodge to Ol-
der Grand Chancellor A. N. Prince
of Bherraan made a Abort address in
which he said that every negro
Knight was agalnlt crime and declar-
ed that they condemned and did not
condone criminality Among any
people. ‘‘Some men have mistaken
Ideas about the principles of the
order. I have heard it said that if
you become A Knight of Pythia*
you can do any kind of crime and
get out of It." said DT. Prince, "but
this t* a big mistake, and if any
man has joined With that In view he
had just as well get out, because if
you viol Ate the JAW of the Mato w*
will be among the first to turn you
up. This ts not the hiding place for
criminals nor do we cover up crime,
but we believe in law and order, and
we will do all in our power to sup-
port it.
"Tell It so that all the world may
hear—-print it in the heaven above
so that he who runs may read, th»t
the negro Pythians of Texaa will
frown down, cry down, kick down,
hunt, down, strike down crime and
criminals until not one shall be left
in all the land and a black face shah
be a badge of truth, of peace, of pro-
teetton to innocence. I know that
these criminals do not. form a pan
of our audiences, our lodge*, our
church congregations, schools and so-
cial gatherings, industrial communi-
ties, and yet it is our duty to seek
their haunts and the influence* that
produce crime* and criminals and
with the whip of the law and the gos-
pel of righteousness soourge them and
scourge them until vicious Idleness
shall give place to virtuous industri-
ous intelligence and thus purge our-
selves and wash away these foul
stains of dishonor from a glorious
record transmitted to us by our fath
ers, though but slaves."
I, HUMS*
WARNING.

Perhaps this report is a joke, but
one thing is certain a baldhead is no
joke to the man who wears it.
A club of baldheads formed in
every city in America would be a
good thing if Its members could be
induced to parade hatless, through
the main streets of the city.
The writer would suggest that
some of the members carry banners
with inscriptions of such a charac-
ter as to warn those who still have
hair that baldness Is unnecessary;
that In nearly every case it la the
result of carelessness. ,
Banners Inscribed as follows would
be appropriate;, ”
“We let the dandruff gem do it.
"The time to save the hair16 when
you have hair to save.”
"Wthen we were young, the dan-
druff germs worked every blessed
minute. They dug our hair out by
tb# roots and now we aren’t in it.
The best banner of all would be
this, "We didn’t use Parisian gage."
