Olympic
optimistic
by Michael Kwat
Has anyone watched any of the
Olympic tummar games in Seoul
this fall? Wonder what scary tie
Bryant Gumble's gonna wear to-
day? Can you say Matt Biondi?
(be-on-d or by-on-d depending on
what part of the country you’re
from). Hold your breath and
count to seven (that's five gold,
one silver and one bronze).
Young Matt has spelled out
U-S-A in swimming like no one
since Mark Spitz. With a name
like that he could do commer-
cials for Scope. Biondi has made
us forget Nadia Comenici. You
can’t tell me that a million 13
year olds can't make what Nadia
did minuscule.
Speaking of minuscule, how
about that Egyptian basketball
team. Hey Coach Jolley, have I
got a team for you. And what is
the big fuss about professionals
in the Olympic games? Can you
say Chris Everet?
I’m sorry but I'll take King
Carl over Gentle Ben any day.
Ben Johnson might have the
speed, but Carl Lewis has got
style, charisma, the Grace Jones
do. . . .
I'll take Herschel Walker and
Bo Jackson over Ben Johnson in
a race any day. Besides, when

The new Wesleyan soccer team
may be off to a slow start, but
according to players, the real
story about the team's perform-
ance lies not in the win-loss
column but in the team’s effort.
"Our goal is to be in every
game, develop our reputation and
build a solid team through re-
cruits," said David Cahall, goal
keeper of the soccer team. The
team is led by head coach Randy
Waldrum and team captain Ken-
ny Medina.
Despite a 1-4 preseason record,
Cahall and teammates remain
optimistic.
"Our record is not a very good
lindicator of the team. We've
teen in every game.”
Injuries have taken their toll
on Wesleyan so far as well.
While most college soccer squads
field between 18 and 25 players,
WHILE MOST collage teams ere fielding 18-2S soccer players, Texas Wesleyan is holding its own with
13 players. Photo by Naomi DeuFriend
was the last time you saw Ben
Johnson do a down and in or run
over Brian Bosworth? (aside-apo-
ligies to you Mr. Bosworth).
Mary Decker Tabb Slaney Gro-
ver Cleveland Alexander is still
looking for her first medal. Once
the queen of women's track and
field in '83, Mary has settled for
contrary going 0 for the L.A.
Games in '84 and medal-less so
far.
Give me Bird. Magic and Jor-
dan and I'll take on any five man
team from any country. Any
planet for that matter.
Speaking of professional ath-
letes once again, tell me Ben
Johnson is an amateur wheeling
around the Great White North
with his brand new Porsche 928.
Wheaties, the Breakfast of Cham-
pions, huh, not a bad idea. So
long from Seoul so far See ya at
the Badminton Final: Bush vs.
Dukakis. . . .

The Carter Foundation has
helped finance Wesleyan projects
before. The building of the Cam-
pus Center was partially financed
by the Carter Foundation, and it
gave a three year grant of ap-
proximately $200,000 a year for
TWC to develop its masters in
science education program. That
grant has been extended by two
more years.

the Rams have 13 suited.
“We can't do it in practices
and the reason we can't do it is
low numbers.” Indeed, It has been
extremely difficult for the Rams
to develop cohesiveness that a
first year team needs.
“We need as many faces out
there as possible," said Cahall,
asking for some fan support. The
team will play their home games
this year at Rolling Hills, located
behind the Fort Worth Masonic
Home and near the TCJC South-
east Campus. The next home
game will be against the Univer-
sity of Dallas at 5:00 p.m. Oct. 5.
The Rams are definitely a
young team, but have been in
every game. One of the Rams'
toughest confrontations will come
against St. Mary’s Letourneao.
St. Mary's is ranked tenth in the
Midwest Region in NCAA Divi-
sion I.
Colleges need

codes to specifically pro-
hibit sexual assaults and
provide certain rights for
victims.
• Establish procedures to mo-
dify living arrangements
when the victim and the ac-
cused live in the same hous-
ing.
• Institute mandatory, campus-
wide educational programs
on sexual assault for stu-
dents, faculty, and staff.
• Provide support services for
victims, including immedi-
ate medical treatment and
counseling, and develop
procedures for how college
personnel should respond to
victim reports.
Abarbanel added that “The
consequences of not implement-
ing widespread changes are po-
tentially enormous. Without new
policies and programs, victims
will not come forward to receive
the help they need to recover
from their trauma; most assail-
ants will not be brought to jus-
tice; and campus rape will con-
tinue to escalate.”
The Rape Treatment Center of
Santa Monica Hospital was es-
tablished in 1974 and has pro-
vided professional treatment to
over 9,000 sexual assault victims
and their families. The Center
has been instrumental in effect-
ing legislative and administrative
changes to enhance victims’
rights and prosecution of of-
fenders. In 1980, the Rape Treat-
ment Center led the successful
effort to remove the victim re-
sistance standard from the Cali-
fornia rape laws.
