Concerned that the area
around the Chimney Rock
Courthouse will be neglect-
ed by commercial investors
and developers, local busi-
nessmen have formed the
West Park Central Associa-
tion to study and seek solu-
tions to the area's problems.
The new association
represents 800 acres

"We lack a proper sani-
tary sewer system: we’re
underdeveloped around
here," bemoans J.M. Hill,
an area apartment owner
and one of the associaton’s
founders. The Galleria area
just across the way, Hill
notes, sells for about $225 a
foot compared to only $10 a
foot for his own land.
Six businessmen decided
to form the organization
about two months ago, Hill
says. The group has since
grown to include about 60
business people.
Influencing the city of
Houston and Harris County
to bring street improve-
ments into their area is one
of their primary goals, Hill
says. They will also ask the
Metropolitan Transit Au
thority to increase bus ser-
vice to the area, and will
push for the completion of
the Westpark Corridor, a rail
project MTA announced al-
most two years ago.
"We hope to develop
project plans for certain
areas, then meet with the
county or city and see if they
will follow our suggestions,"
says association president
Welcome Wilson, Jr., presi-
dent of Charles Church
International.
Until recently the group
worked only in concept,
generally discussing the
kind of problems it should be
examining, says Wilson.
Now the group is divided
into committees to study
specifics such as area
beautification, crime pre-
vention, increased street
lights, and improving the
Harris County Burnett Bay-
land Park.
The group also hopes to
recruit volunteers to pick up
trash, to plant trees, flow-
ers, and other foliage around
the area, Wilson says.
“In places where families
live, there are people to take
care of the area, but this
section is mostly industrial
and needs attention," he
says. "We want to give it
that needed attention.”
