Rams romp 'Roos with 38 runs scored
by Michel* Hogan
The Wesleyan baseball team
hopped all over the Kangaroos
of Austin College Monday, Feb.
22 Both games of the double
header were called in the fifth
inning on the ten run rule, with
their final scores being 19-0,
19-0. Never before have the Rams
scored 38 runs in one afternoon
aside from totally shutting down
their opponent.
"We probably would have
scored even more if the wind
hadn't been so bad," commented
center fielder Scott Thoma.
“Balls that would have gone over
the right field fence on a calmer
day were blown foul.”
Austin College seemed to have
pitching problems and a lack of
defense. Of the nine runs scored
in the first inning, seven of
those were actually batted in,
another was walked in and one
was a pass ball.
"At least the game gave every-
one a chance to play, everyone
got some batting time in. It was
fun,” said outfielder Kyle Ap-
person.
Michael Esparza was the start-
ing pitcher of the second game.
“It felt good to pitch again Be-
cause of knee surgery I was out
all last season. I hadn't pitched
in a college game for the past
two years. It was an easy win
but it was still fun."
Coach Brad Bass' only com-
ments were, “It was a fun day
and it gave a lot of guys play-
ing time."
On the road Wednesday, the
Rams were .'defeated by South-
western, 4-9,f 3-13.
“It was our first road trip
and we weren’t ready for it. It
was a learning (iay.^We found
out that not everjtbMy is going
to lay down and lose,” said
Bass. “The umpires were good
in the first game, tliiey were just
calling a little lower strike zone
than we're used to. It was a
pitcher's zone, not a hitter's. By
the second game the umps
weren’t as good. Darkness was

hitting and they were trying to

Freshman Kevin Wcik was
starting pitcher in the first game
and left the mound with a lead.
"We needed to have won,"
commented catcher Matthew
Langford “We were ahead but
we let it slip. They played hard
We've got to take advantage of
the situations given to us and
avoid mistakes. It will be a dif-
ferent story next time, we hope."
Pitcher Mark Johnston went
in after Weik. “Playing on the
road is a lot different. We had
to adjust to new umps. They
had home cookin' at their place
— the calls were just a little bit
better for them.”
Friday's scheduled game with
Southern Methodist was can-
celled due to a conflict on SMU's
part so Bass decided to leave a
day early for Abilene to get in
an extra game Friday night
against his alma mater, Hardin-
Simmons.
The Rams were defeated in
the three game series, 7-11, 1-4,
3.11.
"I think for leaving on the
spur of the moment, getting
caught in traffic, just hopping
off the bus, no time for batting
practice or dinner, hurt us. We
made some mistakes," said Lang-
ford.
Inficlder Stevie Houghton had
a good night, hitting two home
runs. "I played great and I was
the only one who played great.
No one else even came close to
the game I had. If everyone else
had played like me we would
have won by the ten run rule,"
he commented.
Saturday the situation hadn’t
improved. The Rams lost the
double header and went through
almost the entire pitching line-
up available.
“At our field the backstop is
20 feet from home plate. But
at HSU it was 63 feet, so the
coachcr looked farther away. It
threw our perception off,” ex-
plained pitcher Larry Krob.
“It just wasn't our weekend.
We had too many walks. Really
the only good part about Abilene
was seeing how dedicated some
of our fans are. They drove all
the way down there, got speed-
ing tickets and sunburn. It felt
good to look up in the stands
and see smiling faces," said
Philip Irby, pitcher.
“I came home and got a kick-
ing," said Bash. “We played
well, we only had one error, we
threw strikes, we hit well, theirs
fell and ours didn't. We’re as
good a team as when we played
them in Fort Worth and shut
them out. That’s the fun part
of this game. Sometimes they
fall and sometimes they don’t.”
Tennis teams volley for victories
by Michsl* Hogan
The new Wesleyan tennis
teams, men’s and women’s, play-
ed their first conference games
this weekend with the ladies
victorious over St. Ed's 5-4.
Michelle Cary and Susan Sieg-
mund won the deciding doubles
match against St. Edwards. Both
are on the women’s basketball
team and haven’t had much
chance to practice tennis.
“We ended basketball Tues-
day, practiced by ourselves Wed-
nesday and with the team on
Thursday and left Friday to play
our first college tennis meets,”
said Cary.
“Jumping from one sport to
the other was fun. It was good
to try something new. We are
different from the rest of the
team. It’s not that we have good
refined tennis skills, instead we
have athletic ability and we’re
still in shape from basketball.
Susan and I are athletes who can
play tennis, they’re tennis play-
ers. We’re used to team sports
and communicate well, we get
each other up.
“90% of the game is mental.
1 think we were mentally ready.
It was the deciding match and
we knew we had to be aggres-

Coach Laura Suarez was hired
last June to begin the tennis
program. “I did the best I could
with little scholarship money.
I’ve never recruited before. The
school budget is very limited,
just the bare essentials like
travel and t-shirts. And during
the season it’s impossible to
fund raise.
"I took the job because I've
been teaching tennis at country
clubs for 10-15 years and I want-
ed a more fulfilling career than
saying ‘This is how to hit a fore-
arm’. I wanted to have an im-
pact on kids’ lives in the college
situation,” she continued.
“Everyone played well this
weekend,” said Cary. “If every-
body keeps a good attitude, we’ll
go far."
This Saturday TWC will face
MCC here, at noon.
