Rams extend home win streak
by Michael Jamas Kwa>
Todd Obadal and Buff Sellman
There cornea a point in time
where a team has to put up or
shut up. And with the Ram cag-
ers posting an 810 clip at the
time and having considerable dif-
ficulty on the road, it was time
for the former. TWC took to the
floor and diligently took care of
the visiting Hilltoppers of St.
Edwards 81 77.
A steal and jam by freshman
Rod Gordon who ended the Rams
leading scorer with 17 put the
Rams on a roll. "I was impressed
with the play of Rod Gordon
and Rodell Smith who both had
excellent games," said coach
Charles Jolley. Indeed Jolley was
correct In his assessment of the
two freshmen. Smith pumped in
15 of his own and added six re-
bounds. With 11:20 left the Rams
found themselves with a slight
two point advantage. Gordon had
a steal and lay-up, freshman
Charles Johnson had a nifty steal
and lay-up of his own and Junior
John Seladin connected with a 3
pointer to give the Rammies a
10-12 lead. St. Edwards had trou-
ble with the press and the quick-
ness of the Rams and couldn't
get on track. With 4:08 remain-
ing Jave McCaskill, junior trams
fer went on a five point spurt
with two short running hooks
and a free-throw. The Rams led
31-18 at this venture Minutes
later, Smith penetrated the
lane and put two in to give
the Rams a 38-24 halftime advan
tagc.
Smith and teammates picked
up where they left off in the
first half. Early in the second
half Smith fed Gordon for an
easy two, Jeff Kalbfleisch re-
ceived a beautiful pass from
Smith underneath, instant two,
Ro followed up a steal with
two and then made a behind the
back pass to Gordon to push the
Rams lead to 48-27. St. Edwards
had trouble finding the back of
the rim early on, and the Rams
lead grew to 57-35 when fresh-
man Wayne Deleon jammed on
an assist from, guess who?,
Smith.
This huge lead might have con-
tributed to the Rams lacksadaisi-
cal play afterwards. The Rams
made some fouls, turned the ball
over and made some key mis-
takes enabling St. Edwards to
climb back into the contest 58-52.
One key reason for this was the
play of St. Edwards 6'6” junior
Jay Lee Hobbs, Jr who burned
the Hams in the paint with seven
consecutive points. With a little
over a minute left in the game.
St. Ed's trailed by only 4. 75-71.
But the Rammies fought off the
attack as Ro and Fish hit four
clutch frecthrows a piece to cush
ion the Ram lead and solidify a
much needed victory.
“We are team oriented. Any-
one on the court can shoot as
well as the other. We have four
players scoring in double fig
urcs."
It was prophetic. Two hours
after these words were uttered
the Texas Wesleyan College
Rams had turned in the team
effort of the season. The whole
squad saw action and six players
chipped at least 10 points Into
the scorebook. If only it were
Jolley that had made the
aforementioned pre-game state-
ment, could we be witness to a
resident Nostradamus.
Herschel Kimbrell, Coach of
the McMurry Indians, is credited
with the words of at least par-
tial precognition. It is he who is
also credited for bringing his
team to the Sid W. Richardson
Center to be the 25th consecutive
victim of Ramball at home in a

McMurry stand-out James
Swoopes pul up 20 to lead all
scorers, bul it was the unrelcnt
ing and conspicuously balanced
attack of the Wesleyan ball club
that proved superior. And it
wasn't the typical names one
hoars called off that were doing
the damage.
Anthony Armstrong broke a
five game personal slump by
scoring 18 points, all in the first
half. In the second half it was
Chip Dickens who was the Wes-
leyan scoring machine. He put in
nine for a total of 13 for the
game.
S a I a d I n went out of the
game in the first half with a
sprained ankle and only two
points. Smith got the call as the
Rams outside threat. Canning
three three-point shots, Ro wound
up with 11 points for the evening.
Key players for the Rams were
Armstrong, Dickens, Smith, Mc-
Caskill, Gordon, Brad Simmons,
and D'Leon. Top scorers were
Armstrong with 16, Dickens with
13, Smith with 11, McCaskill,
Gordon and Simmons each with
10, and DeLeon with eight
In team statistics, Wesleyan
left McMurry behind. The Rams
made 39 of 74 field goal attempts,
while McMurry made 28 of 80
In rebounds. McMurry recovered
11 offensive and 21 defensive for
a total of 32. Wesleyan had 19
offensive and 21 defensive for a
total rebound count of 57.
In the second half, Wesleyan
increased the lead over McMurry
to approximately 20 paints and
maintained that lead throughout
the remainder of the game.
Individually, the top blockers
for the Rams were Jave McCas-
kill with 8. Wayne D'Leon with
2. and Jeff Kalbfleisch with 11.
Steals were made by Rod Gor-
don, Chip Dickens, Brad Oldham,
Brad Simmons, Rodell Smith, Jim
Landtroop, and Jeff Kalbfleisch.
The next home game will be
February 6, with the women at
5:30 and the men at 7:30.
Lady Rams looking
to make turnaround
by Todd Obadal
After dropping the conference
opener in San Antonio to St.
Mary’s, 69-63, Coach Beth Palmer
and the Lady Rams looked to
rebound at home against the
Hilltoppers of St. Edwards. Palm-
er anticipated a physical game
in which the officiating would be
very important.
The Hilltopper’s coach, David
McKey, brought in an intimidat-
ing front line that displayed
three six-footers. Palmer’s plan
was to stop the inside game and
force St. Ed’s to shoot from the
outside. The Lady Rams were
successful in their game plan by
holding the mountainous Pattie
Phillips, Marian Michel, and Lisa
Hudson to a combined total of 11
points.
In spite of this, St. Edward’s
went home with a 72-65 victory.
It wasn’t the officiating that was
the real difference in the game,
but rather the 32 turnovers that
were committed by TWC. “I feel
very fortunate to have won the
game," McKey said. "We played
poorly tonight."
Citing the time out taken with
three minutes to go as the key
point in the game McKay said,
“I told my team (during the
time out) thaat we can’t win if
we can't pass the ball. After
that, (Sherrie) Hawkins went and
hit two straight shots and then
we took a five point lead."
And that was it. Michelle
Powell hit five free throws down
the stretch to insure a St. Eds
victory. After the game Palmer
expressed her frustration with
the game and the team. “We are
definitely not playing up to our
potential. We have a group of
ladies who are very hard work-
ers, but I’m not quitte sure how
committed the group is.”
