Registration begins
for recycling symposium
Registration is now open for individuals, representatives of community groups
or city government representatives for a day-long symposium on starting a
successful recycling program.
The symposium, “So You Want to Recycle...” will be held Saturday, Jan. 27 at
the Bellaire Civic Center, 7008 S. Rice Ave., sponsored by the Bellaire Recycling
Committee.
Cost is $25, including lunch; $15 for Bellaire residents. Call 662-8222 for
registration information.
Highlights include a keynote address by W. Woody Raine, recycling coordina
tor for the city of Austin and president of the Recycling Coalition of Texas; a
presentation by Glendon Eppler of the Texas Department of Health about how
stringent new state and federal landfill regulations, scheduled to go into effect in
April, will affect local waste management programs and how recycling can help
ease some of those ill effects.
Information on the marketing and processing of recyclables will be featured at
another session, with participants from major recycling companies.
During the lunch break, exhibitors will be on hand to provide additional
information on recycling opportunities.
The day’s events will be moderated by Tom Koch, morning news anchor and
business editor for KTRK-TV.
The Bellaire Recycling Committee has operated a community recycling pro-
gram, featuring a dropoff center accepting aluminum, glass, tin cans, newspaper
and plastic, for 18 months. It evolved from a one-weekend-a-month collection of
newspaper and aluminum cans to the center, open daily and now nets the
community about $1,500 a month in proceeds from the sale of recyclables. The
money is used to fund community projects and to promote and educate citizens
about recycling.
