Pittsburg, Pa.. Nov. 28— In an ex
plosion of the Buffalo Jones mines al
Marianna, Pa, near Monongabela.

The explosion destroyed both shafts
and a fierce ft re is raging, and the
chance of rescue is small.
The explosion occurred al 11:25 (his
morning, the entire neighborhood be-
ing shaken. An instant later Ihe
alarm was intensified by the Issuing
of smoke from the shafts. A mo-
ment later the entire village was
alive and hurrying to the scene of
disaster. The dense clouds of smoke
gave way to a deadly conflagration
which drove the spectators to a place
of safety. Reports received from Mo-
nongabela say mere were only a hun-
drad la the mine when the explosion
cam# and most of them were English
men
Scenes about the mine are heart-
rending In Ibe extreme, babel and
erlea of anguish being heard from the
frenxled multitude of women and chil-
dren and almost every language of
Southern Europe could he heard.
The shaft Is comletely closed by de-
bris, and It Is impossible lo reach the
victims, who may all be dead. A spe-
cial left Pittsburg at 12:30 carrying
officials of the company to the scene.

Famous Murder Case From Sabine
County to be Called at Orange
Judge E. A. Cheatham, district at
toroey for Ihe First Judicial District,
whose home is a I Ornnge. spent yes-
terday In Beaumont and Is here for
Ihe remainder of the week for the
Beaumont fair and carnival.
Judge Cheatham says that the grand
jury at Orange has recessed until Mon-
day nexi. when It will resume Its de-
liberations and the case of 1 .eland
Huberts, the negro charged with the
brutal murder of Hugh Doan In Sabine
county last summer and which went
to Orange county on a change of
venue. Is get for trial In Ihe district
court. This was the noted case In
Sabine county which was followed by
an assassination of another white man
not long afterwards, and led to the
■wholesale lynching of negroes taken
from the Sabine eounty Jail at Hemp-
hill. Process has been issued for
numerous witnesses In Ihe ease from
Sabine county to go to Orange next
Monday.—Beaumont Enterprise.
On Sunday, December 5th, at
Paul's Episcopal church, the Orange
Lodge of Elks will hold memorial ser-
vices, the day being observed through
out the United States In all cities
where an Elks lodge is locate)].
The program Is now In the hands
of the committee and plans are being
made to have an extensive and ap-
propriate program.
There will be a number of addresses
delivered by prominent members
the local order, including Messrs. Geo.
H. Holland and Rev. T. J. Sloan, rec-
tor of the Episcopal church.
A splendid musical program Is be-
ing arranged and a number of selec-
tions will be rendered by some of
the best talent In the city, while the
choir service will be In keeping.
This day Is observed throughout the
country as the annual day for memor-
la lservlces of the Elks lodges, and
wherever there is a lodge of that or-
der, services are held appropriate to
the occasion.

gressman 8. B. Cooper leaves tonight
for Washington, D. C., where, togeth-

engineering board of the war depart-
ment and later before the rivers and
harbors committee of the national
house of representatives In the inter-
est of securing appropriations fora
greater depth of water in the Sabine
Lake canal. Mr. Cooper is hopeful
that, as a result of their effort* at
Washington, a recommendation may
obtained for including the Beau-
mont ship canal in the waterways pro-
jects to be Improved by the govern-
ment and for which provision will be
made In the rivers and harbors bill at
coming session of congress.
