Running down crime
By Marie Moynahan
Texan Columnist
“Walk softly and carry a
BIG STICK.”
This quote, in effect,
wraps up the message which
Bellaire Detective Don
McCarver, who drives the
Police Department’s Com-
munity Services Mobile
Unit, would like for people
to fully comprehend.
Hundreds of pamphlets
relating to health and safety
in every range are neatly
housed in his van. Safety
measures for security in the
home, office, self and theft
protection, fraud, drug and
alcohol abuse, tips for ba-
bysitters and wise use of
medicines for the elderly are
just a few.
If you haven’t seen or
heard Officer McCarver
you’ve missed very infor-
mative talks from a man
who exudes a feeling that
you’ve known him all of
your life. He is a most popu-
lar speaker at schools, clubs,
private homes, banks plus
many business committee
events and has been teach-
ing in this capacity since
1985 after entering the Bel-
laire Police Department in
1980.
Being very proud
of the Mobile Police Com-
munity Services Van, this
Scotch Irishman explains
that it was donated to the
Police Department in 1985
as a project of the Bellaire
Southwest Houston Cham-
ber of Commerce Public
Safety Committee.
The construction of the
inner storage units was a
donation of Dean Sans, a
Bellaire cabinet maker.
When the van was featured
at a law enforcement con-
vention display recently
held at the Galvez Mall in
Galveston, State Senator
Chet Brooks was favorably
impressed after his special
tour of the vehicle.
With 16 years experi-
ence in law enforcement,
McCarver worked six years
at the Irving, Texas, Police
Department, two years at

The week of Nov. 8,
The Texan will relocate its
sales and editorial offices to
6223 Richmond, Suite 102.

After the move. The
Texan’s new phone num-
ber will be 783-5600.

Services will be headed up
by The Texan’s new vice

tems, Jim Ostrom.
As a pacesetter in the

illustrative of The Texan’s

School in Houston and vari-
ous newsletters, brochures
