Rams 4-5 in conference
by Michels Hogan
After splitting a three game
series with Incarnate Word, the
Rams are now 4-5 in the Heart
of Texas Conference.
The Rams began the series
with a double header. The first
game went into five extra in-
nings. Pitcher Jeff Wood endured

Two Wesleyan students placed
in the Cowtown 10k race on Feb-
ruary 28. Freshman Dacre Dra-
per took seventh and freshman
Jennifer Cleveland came in
eighteenth out of their age
group.
Both can be seem running
around campus (literallyI every
day.
"I really don’t feel good un-
less I’ve run that day. Running
is good for people. I used to
hate it. But once you get hooked,
■ you need to run,” said Cleve-
land.
In preparation for the race
neither changed their workout
much. “We would maybe run
four miles instead of three. And
we made sure to encourage each
other to run every day. That's
about it,” said Cleveland.
“We don't have the same
pace," explained Cleveland.
“Dacre is faster, but it still is
good to run with somebody else."
“We don’t run at night. We
watch out for each other, it'd
be stupid not to in this neighbor-
hood," Cleveland added.
Future plans for Cleveland
might include running in a mara-
thon, “sometime in my life.”

12th inning when he was re-
lieved by Kevin Welk. ICW had
been ahead 5-0 until the fifth
when designated hitter Steve
Brierc hit a home run bringing
in two men on base. The
game was tied 6-6 from the
seventh on until ICW scored in
the 12th.
The Rams came back in the
second game scoring three runs
in the fifth to top the Crusaders'
two runs. Mark Johnston pitched
six innings gaining his third win
of the season.
After playing 19 in-
nings on Friday afternoon the
Rams stayed strong to defeat
ICW one more time 8-5 on Satur-
day. Tommy Moore and Scott
Thoma both knocked balls over
the fence helping the team to
gain a lead that the Crusaders
could never catch.
Catcher Lance Alford hit a
double that brought in two

Soccer Field
update
Although there are no definite
plans, President Jerry Bawcom
said TWC will most likely place
the soccer-football field behind
Stella Russel Hall.
The college owns the street
behind Stella. If the field goes in
behind Stella, the street would
be closed and the field would
be placed there. Such action
would deviate from the model
shown in the Administration
Building.
Bawcom said he is still hoping
to have the field in by the '89
soccer season. “The city is mov-
ing real slow on the drainage
project" which is needed to put
the fields in place, said Bawcom.

We've got to continue to hit well
consistently. Every once In a
while we Just don't get the key
hits when we need them." said
Alford. "We should have won the
first game on Friday but we let
it slip Things will get better
this season but it's up to us
how much. We control our own
destiny. We need to sweep Mary
Hardin Baylor this weekend."
Pitcher Larry Bob Krob was
credited with the win after com-
ing in in the third to pitch the
next five innings. Krob had been
on injured reserve because of
back problems. "After therapy
and medication my back isn’t
bothering me anymore. It feels
so good to be able to throw with-
out pain," Krob commented.
Previous conference games in-
cluded losing a series 0-3 to St.
Mary's in San Antonio and split-
ting a series 2-1 with St. Ed-
ward's at home. A scheduled
gany; with Texas Lutheran was
rained out and will be made up
later in the season.
Highlights against St. Edwards
featured the Rams bouncing back
strong after losing the first game
1-8. The second game was close
with strong performances by
Michael Esparza who held the
llilltoppers to never more than
one run each inning. Outfielder
Deron Rombach hit a home run
and center fielder Scott Thoma
had a cosistent streak of three
doubles.
The Rams again defeated the
Hilltoppers 15 8 in the third game
with four of their at bats knocked
out of the park. Gene Scott,
Steve Brierc, Kurt Dow and Rudy
Sotelo all hit homers. Thirteen
of the 15 runs came in dur-
ing the last two innings.
“We're right back in it," said
Coach Brad Bass. "The guys
know what we have to do to
win conference. It's in our hands.
I’m proud of how hard we’ve
been playing. They're walking
out on to the field wanting to
win. It's fun to be getting play-
ers like Krob back full strength
after recovering from injury."
The Rams next conference
games will be against Mary Har-
din Baylor this weekend. Friday
a double header will be played
at home and Saturday they will
travel to Waco to complete the
series.
