DOWN ON THE FARM
by Ima Weed
AMAZING.....BUT TRUE
"Wind in the east, fish bite
the least. Wind in the west,
fish bite the best. Wind in the
south, blows bait into the
fishes’ mouth,’’ chanted Jim-
son as he oiled his rod and
reel. It was a perfect day to do
a lot of things but I knew from
all symptoms that Jimson had
his heart set on going fishing.
When spring came, Jimson
could "feel” the right time to
fish.
He sat placidly by the kit-
chen door. His gear was strew-
ed on the porch steps. A big
coffee can , half full of dirt
and coffee grounds, held many
fat, long worms. Jimson was
going to go down the road to
try his luck in the pond.
"Hey,” he yelled through
the kitchen doorway, "where’s
the fly swatter?”
"I know where mine is and
I want it left there.” I called
back. "Where did you hang it
the last time you went fishing? ”
Mumbling a little, he won-
dered toward the milkhouse.
Jimson took a swatter with him
when he went fishing in order
to kill fresh hoppers.
h sighed. It was useless to
ask him to dig around the rose
bushes; throw dirt into the
compost hole; de-mite the
chicken roosts or do other
little jobs too numerous to
mention.
I foraged in the ice box (not
refrigerator) for something I
could make into a lunch. When
Jimson’s eyes took on a cer-
tain gleam I knew what it
meant. The sooner he went
fishing, the sooner I could
talk him into helping me with
those odd jobs most men hate
to do.
Upon finding his swatter,
Jimson returned to the porch to
pack his tackle box. As I poked
a small paper bag, containing
his snack, out the kitchen
door, I asked, "what about the
north wind?”
"Huh?” returned Jimson,
rather blank. "All winds have
an effect on fishing but the
north wind,” I retorted, refering
to the little jingle he chanted
when he went fishing.
"That’s the most effective
of all.” Jimson grinned.
"Honey, WHO would want to
fish when the find is in the
north?”
"I know it sounds crazy
but some men would,” I said.
Jimson’s eyes grew dreamy
as he leaned against the door
post. He smiled a little as he
began to tell me about a
'Northwindward’ fishing trip
he and two buddies had taken
long ago. I pulled up a stool
and sat down in the doorway.
This had the ear marks of a
real Texas yarn.
My spouse ended the story
by saying, "that broke me of
fishing when the wind was in
the north.” He picked up his
rod and tackle box.
"Did you catch anything?”
I asked hopefully as Jimson
stepped from the porch.
"Yep,” he grinned, "I
caught one of the biggest,
longest, heaviest, and best
COLD’s that I ever had!”
Lightning kills more people
in the U. S. than any other
natural disaster, an average
of 400 dead per year.

soles of his toes are outfitted
with sharp spicules. This en-
ables him to hold the slimy
fish until he is on a safe perch
to devour his dinner.
The fish hawk hovers over
the water where he has spotted
his prey and then suddenly
dives and grasps the fish in
his claws. The fish hawk
though is not the only fish
lover. The bald eagle loves
them, too, but doesn’t like to
fish for them. Sometimes as
the osprey flies away with his
catch, the bald eagle swoops
down and attacks the osprey
causing him to drop his fish.
Then, quickly, the eagle dives
and catches the fish before it
reaches the water.
The thieving eagle is much
like Satan who, "When any
one heareth the Word of the
kingdom, and understandeth it
not, then cometh the wicked
one, and catcheth away that
which was sw&n in his heart."
