Some Landlords
Fail To Register
Dwelling Units
A preliminary survey and re-
ports by some tenants reveal that
some landlords in Medina County
have failed to register their rent-
al dwelling units at the Rent Stab-
ilization office in Hondo.
Landlords who fail to register
may be faced with the'penalty of
retroactive payments to the base
date; that is, back to July 1, 195-1,
if rents for tneir units are found
to be higher than those generally
prevailing.*
On the other band, if the rent
for any registered unit is found
to be nigher than rents generally
prevailing for comparable oi sim-
ilar type units, retroactive i*ay-
ments would apply only to rentals

Car Inspections
Said Lagging
Only one-sixth of Medina Coun-
ty motorists have had their ve-
hicles inspected, Herbert E: Hale
of Del Rio, head of tin* Motor Ve-
Jiicle Inspection Division of the
Texas Department of Public
Safety for this area has announc-
ed.
Some 1,173 vehicles in the coun-
ty have undergone the^est, and
Hale reports that there are <5,096
in the county Six official, inspec-
tion stations have been set up
and most are able to handle more
cars than are now coming in.
Hale advised motorists to have
their cars inspected at their earl-
iest convenience, thereby eliminat-
ing a bottle-neck at the Sept. 0,
1952, deadline.
Inspections are also lagging
throughout the state, particularly
in southwest Texas, Hale said.
Inspections arc now averaging
45.000. per week, and this figure
must be doubled to meet the Sep-
tember deadline.
In support of the compulsory
inspection iaw. Hale released the
following figures: Vehicle de-
fects caused 13 per cent of all
known accidents in Texas during
1950: other states with similar
records and conditions reduced
that, figure to 3 per cent after the
first year of compulsory inspec-
tion. Figures for 1951 are not
available, he said.
