Dolores
Undaunting pioneer,
woman-warrior
With an everchanging
spirit, strong,
Capable
Of life-altering,
Mysterious quiet
creations,
The woman suffers
Hurts in silence,
Learning, coping,
Becoming stronger.

Job Candidate’s
Appearance
Influences
Employers’
Opinions
Submitted by Susan Sprole
Appearance counts to em-
ployers who recruit new college
graduates, and it can influence
their hiring decisions, according
to Job Outlook 2002, an annual
survey conducted by the Na-
tional Association of Colleges
and Employers (NACE).
In short, body piercing or
purple hair can cost a candidate
a job offer. Most (92 percent) of
the respondents to Job Outlook
2002 said that a candidate’s
overall appearance influences
their opinion about the candi-
date. They also reported that at-
tributes such as nontraditional
interview attire (82 percent),
handshake (74 percent), unusual
hair color (73 percent) or style
(64 percent), body piercing (72
percent), and obvious tattoos (69
percent) influence their opinion.
Interestingly, most said that
beards (83 percent) and mus-
taches (90 percent) would have
no influence on them.
“Students need to keep in
mind that what is commonplace
on campus may not be accept-
able in the workplace,” says
Marilyn F. Mackes, NACE ex-
ecutive director.
So, be sure to “clean up your
act” before going on an inter-
view, if the job is important to
you. Come by the Career Ser-
vices Office (SLC 102) for more
useful advice. We are open
Wednesday evenings until
7:00pm to better serve you.
