Classes at Lackland AFB
- Not Just for Military
It is a common misconcep-
tion that civilian students are
not permitted to take classes
on the local military bases. In
fact, civilians are welcome and
regularly make up one third to
one half of all St. Philip’s en-
rollments at Lackland AFB.
SPC has a long established
academic program at Lack-
land, spanning more than 20
years. Each semester a wide
variety of academic courses are
available, including: English,
history, government, develop-
mental and college level math,
social sciences, humanities,
and natural sciences.
Flexible 8-week evening
classes are formatted with the
returning adult student in
mind. Many students manage
lull time enrollment while work-
ing full time. Betsy Hamilton,
off-site coordinator for SPC at
Lackland, states, “The pro-
gram on Lackland is significant
and growing, hi2005, the Lack-
land site offered approximately
125 PC courses and labs with
over 2100 enrollments.”
Hamilton is proud of die pro-
gram and boasts about the fa-
cilities and new technologies
supporting Lackland AFB
courses. “We have fabulous
accommodations including
two computer labs with high-
speed Internet, and each class-
room is equipped with SMART
Board^chnology. This al-
lows for wonderful audio and
visual support and real-time
Internet connectivity to en-
hance classroom instruction.”
The Lackland program has
three full-time staff members
with over 35 years combined
military and adult education ex-
perience. This team under-
stands returning adult stu-
dents and strives to remove
educational barriers that would
hinder academic achievement
and assists students in reach-
ing their educational goals.
If you are a current student
and would like to take your
courses in an accelerated for-
mat, call the SPC Lackland AFB
Team at 670-1041 for specific
directions and procedures to
obtain a base pass for your
Lackland classes. Civilian stu-
dents must be able to present
their student schedule show-
ing enrollment in a LAFB
course, their valid driver’s li-
cense, proof of up-to-date
vehicle insurance, and vehicle
registration to obtain a pass.
The next term begins October
23. View the Lackland AFB
