Development needed...
Dear Editor:
HISD taking over the Prudential building and
reducing Bellaire’s tax base 5 percent merely
shows how vulnerable Bellaire taxpayers really
are. Bellaire citizens want to maintain the integrity
of a residential community on a declining tax base.
It’s not possible. A modernization program that
comprehensively allows for new development
would increase the tax base, allowing for more
services that the Bellaire citizens have come to
expect and enjoy. Perhaps it will take losing the
Prudential building to jolt the majority into action.
They can thank the vocal minority for any tax
increases.

Stop fighting sale...
Dear Editor:
I want to say, “Hooray!” to Sally Jones for her
letter in The Texan (12-25-85.) Our father’s home
is in Section 4 and was flooded horribly from Braes
Bayou. Our family was one of the first families to
move to Meyerland when it was being developed
and there was no freeway at that time. We were all
so proud of our new homel We planted the front
and back yards with loving care and enjoyed many
happy years there We lost our father last year, the
day after Christinas, and the home wc all returned
to for holidays with our children no longer has the
value (sale wise) as it once did. We will
all be sad to see it sold.
I recently visited Meyerland Shopping Center
and was totally shocked at the boarded up shops
and depressing atmosphere that used to be so
glamorous and exciting! Meyerland is definitely
not the way it was 30 years ago. It is indeed no
longer a quiet, residential, family-oriented com-
munity. It is deteriorating rapidly and every time it
rains we all worry about Dad’s home being flooded
again. To me it is ludicrous to throw good money
after bad to keep fighting the sale. It can only

enhance and improve property values of the
remaining sections of Meyerland (who, by the way,
don’t have to put up with the freeway noise and the
fwe-rpciripntial streets turned into an extension of
the freeway). We will be saying good-bye to a large
portion of our memories spent in that home over
the years, but progress must go on.

Trolley fund in need...
Dear Editor:
Mr. Lane and 1 were surprised and shocked to
have won the raffle for the $1,000 given by the
Bellaire Sesquicentennial Commission, however,
we never received the money in any form. We
never accepted it because, we thought that the
Trolley Fund was in such need of funds. We are
not writing this to get any kind of a pat on the back
or a "isn’t that generous” comment. We are truly
concerned that the people of Bellaire realize that
the Commission is in need of money for the trolley
and for other projects that will require money. For
prizes, items to be sold, etc. At the present time,
the trolley’s bank loan balance is $28,074. The total
cost of the trolley was about $43,000. So, I am
certain that the folks who have signed the note and
the Sesquicentennial Commission would
appreciate any donations you can give them. The
trolley must still be refinished and that will
probably cost another $5,000.

Trees will be wasted...
Dear Editor:
It would seem that the Releaf Houston Program
is wasting a lot of their efforts by planting trees
along main throughfares such as Stella Link,
Buffalo Speedway and Braeswood. By the time the
trees become established, they will have to be cut
down in order to widen the streets.
The residents involved in the Releaf Program
should center their efforts on planting trees in
neighborhood parks.
