Virtual PC at St. Philip’s
Earlier this semester, St.
Philip’s Business Information
Solutions, held its first Micro-
soft Virtual PC orientation for
students registered in the
Microsoft IT Academy to train
on Virtual PC software. The
Academy provides a learning
environment that is accessible
to the students during class
time and lab time, as well as in
the comfort of their own homes.
With Microsoft Virtual PC,
students are now able to work
on servers and other network
configurations from their own
desktops at home, without
having to reconfigure, re-
build, or worry about crash-
ing their own systems. Addi-
tionally students do not have
to have multiple computers to
create a network. With more
than one virtual hard disk, the
students can build their own
virtual networks at home as if
they were working on two or
more computers.
Haydar Sahin, Microsoft
IT Academy faculty, and stu-
dents prepared and configured
Virtual PC images for currently
used Windows 2003 official
curriculum. Sahin presented
the overview and instructions
for the use of Virtual PC dur-
ing the orientation, as well as
publishing the instructions for
students on the Microsoft IT
Academy web site. Over 45
students have now registered
for the Microsoft Virtual PC
orientation and are taking ad-
vantage of this new technol-
ogy, making their learning
portable, affordable and easier.
For questions regarding
Virtual PC, contact Sahin at
531-3486 or Edith Orozco at
531-3364.

SPC SCHOOL SONG
As another spring graduation approaches, the SPC alma
mater/school song, which is sung during commencement
exercises, comes to the forefront of our minds. The words to
the song, as printed in the graduation program, are pro-
vided below for your reference. As per Dr. Angie Runnels
wishes, please familiarize yourself with them and expect
more information in the coming days about scheduled re-
hearsals so that we may be tuned and ready for the gradua-
tion “performance.”
St. Philip’s, St. Philip’s.
* St. Philip’s, we love you because of your truth.
Your arms of protection have guided us from youth,
We love and adore you in all worthy praise,
We sing a sweet song, our voices we raise.
St. Philip’s, we love you because of your fame.
Because of your ideals that have no refrain.
We always adore you and cherish your name;
St. Philip’s, St. Philip’s, our greatest domain.

shop at SPC for secondary math teachers as part of a statewide
effort to improve math scores among English language learners.
Math Scholars Exchange Ideas
April was Mathematics
Awareness Month and leading
mathematics scholars from
around the state used the oc-
casion to convene recently at
St. Philip’s to tackle the prob-
lem of low math scores among
English language learners
(ELL) in Texas’ K-12 schools.
St. Philip’s played host to a
consortium of math experts
who met with local secondary
math teachers as part of an
ambitious statewide project
focused on improving math-
ematics achievement among
students whose native lan-
guage is not English and who
are in the process of develop-
ing English
Dr. Sandra Richardson and
Dr. Mary E. Wilkinson of
Lamar University along with
Dr. Joyce Fischer of Texas State
University led a focus group
of local educators in an effort
to identify professional devel-
opment needs of secondary
math teachers of ELL students.
As a group, these students con-
sistently score among the low-
est of any student group on the
Texas K-12 statewide stan-
dardized assessment: TAKS.
Similar focus groups are being
held throughout the state.
“We were pleased and
proud to host this consortium
of distinguished mathematics
educators,” said Mary Cottier,
chair of the SPC Math Depart-
ment. “The work they are do-
ing will be a natural conduit
to the work that our depart-
ment, college, and district are
currently undertaking via
‘Achieving the Dream’ to im-
prove the success rate of math
students.”
As part of the TSUS MELL
project, Fischer is currently
directing a research study at
Texas State University aimed
at identifying common issues
associated with teaching math
to ELL students.

Focus on Seniors
St. Philip’s Culinary Arts
students and faculty serve a
group of seniors at the Focus
on Seniors service center on
San Antonio’s Southside dur-
ing a recent community ser-
vice visit there. The center is
operated by the San Antonio
Lighthouse for the Blind and
offers recreational and educa-
tional activities for blind and
vision-impaired seniors. Stu-
dents Denise Morel and Lee
Valdez, along with instructor
Rey Valdez Jr., served a three-
course meal and involved the
seniors in the preparation pro-
cess, including taste tests. The
meal incorporated different
aromas, textures, flavors,
sounds and experiences for the
seniors’ benefit.
Similar visits are. antici-
pated in the future. The St.
Philip’s College Associate of
Applied Science Program in
Culinary Arts is accredited by
the American Culinary Federa-
tion and has been rated exem-
plary among community and
technical colleges in the state
by the Texas Higher Education
Coordinating Board, which
oversees and assesses the state
of higher education in Texas.
Information on the SPC Culi-
nary Arts Program is available
by calling 531-3315.
The students in Michael Moran’s English 1301 service-learning
class would like to thank everyone who attended St. Philip’s second
annual Earth Day. The fun- filled event was held in conjunction with
the SPC Culture Fest. San Antonio Water System, City Public Service
and other local vendors attended the fun filled event.
