HOUSTON, Texas, May 8—Hon-
do’s Boon brothers, John and
Herby, for four years stars of the
old Dallas Invitational high'-school
baseball meet, are continuing to
shine as members of the University
of Houston team.
And their baseball histoiies are
probably unique in the entire state.
Lanky John, who beat out Adam-
son’s great Sid Halliday for a first
base berth on the 1948 all-state
schoolboy team, 1* now considered
by observers as one of the top
pitching prospects in Texas col-
leges. ,
Herby has been a catcher -since
he could see over the glove.
Both boys played their share on
sandlot diamonds but John lost in-
terest in baseball through his last
years of grade school and had little
to do with “America’s national
game" until he was a sophomore in
senior high. In 1945, when lie was
in his second year at Hondo, at
Herb’s insistence, John w-ent out
for the baseball team. And he fol-
lowed his brother’s example, be-
coming a catcher.
The Hondo club went on to win
the district title and was invited to
play in the Dallas tourney. •
John was a member of his high
school football team and Herby
played on the basketball team but
even during those seasons, the boys
would hurry home after practice
and toss their baseball back and
forth. It was during these twilight
workouts that John became inter-
ested in pitching.
In 1947, Hondo went to the quar-
ter-finals of the Dallas tournament.
In one game, John caught six
innings and accepted a call to the
mound and pitched the rest of the
game.
The following year, with Herb
behind the plate. John pitched Hon-
do to the semifinals of the meet. He
set down Galveston’s Ball High
School with just two hits that same
season and played first base with
such dexterity he was named to the
all-state high school team at that
position.
Herby, who was one of Univer-
sity of Houston’s top hitters last
season, gives credit for his hitting
ability to Harris Parsons, a former
East Texas Leaguer. In high school
one spring, Herb was struggling
along with a .150 batting average
in the first six ! games. Parsons
worked with him and by the end
of Hondo’s 28-game season, Herb
was powering the ball at a .431
clip.
In their freshman year at the
University of Houston, John set
some sort of record in striking out;
eighty-six batters In a fraction over
sixty-seven innings pitched, while l
Herby whacked the ball for a .303
average and caught in all sixteen
of the Cougabs' games.
Herb thinks John’s best pitc$ is
a sinker, though he has a carve
that breaks off like a walking dane.
Both boys want to play professional
baseball after thdy graduate from
the University of Houston.
