Tigers Overwhelm
97 th MRU 65-58
The St. Philip's Tigers came
from behind to win a well
fought cage tilt Over a polished
97th MRU squad Tuesday, De-
cember 6 in the college gym-
nasium.
A near capacity crowd saw
an inspired Tiger team eradi-
cate an MRU-fashioned lead of
twenty points, brilliantly out-
maneuver the seasoned milita-
ry team from Fort Sam Houston,
and go on to win in true
championship style. The MRU
quintet, coached by the com-
petent captain Carl Willis,
presently in the uppermost
berth of the Fort Sam roundball
league, established an early
lead and at half time had
chalked up thirty-four points,
twenty points ahead of the
Tigers' 14.
The tense and exciting sec-
ond half of the game began;
and Coach William Hudgins'
peptalked team steadily dimin-
ished their opponents lead,
moved ahead, and maintained
their advantage until the final
buzz.
Turning in star performances
for St. Philip's in this 65-58
thriller were Tiger captain, Bob
McVea and shaipshooting
freshman William /McClure.
McVea, ruling the boards with
his powerful jumping, ambi-
dextrously found the goals for
25 points, the high of the game,
and played flawless defensive
ball. McClure, a set shot artist
from the high schools of
Yoakum, racked up 17 points to
(place just below MRU star, Wil-
liam Patterson, who threw in 18.
AROUND THE CAMPUS
(Continued from page 3)
wondering if it's because of her
intellectual ability. Is it? He also
likes brains, but he is wearing
his out trying to choose between
Lillie Pearl Powell and Alta
Swaizey.
Have you noticed Alzo Cole
and Vivian Rideaux "making
eyes" at each other?
We know that most of the
freshmen girls were wondering
who would be the lucky girl
that James Tapscott, Student
Council president, would escort
to the ball. Well, who was she?
Did anyone see Royce Ford
and that certain little "flame"
from Wheatley floating around
in Austin?
Katie Garrett, the cool little
chick who uses the right hand
hook in playing basketball, is
dribbling to the altar this month.
We hope that she makes top
score.
James Beard seems more
interested in his books than in
any of the St. Philip's girls.
Says he, "St. Philip's girls don't
really interest me; the only
interest I have is in attending
Prairie View College." Boy,
don't you realize what you're
missing?
Now that "Blow Bop" has
gone to the Marines, Barbara
Warren is weeping on Booker
Houston's shoulder. And to
think that he had already
proposed to Barbara Roy in the
library!
Bobbie Hickman, the cute
little Phy. Ed. major, adminis-
tered first aid to two players
during a recent basketball
game.
"Cooney" Brown and Chester
Jones also performed admirably
for the Tigers.
Coach Hudgins, pleased with
the victory, congratulated the
team for a well played game!
