‘Hallelujah Girls’
opens this Friday
Play will run at
Bastrop Opera
House.
“The Hallelujah Girls”
opens this Friday at the
historic Bastrop Opera
House, 711 Spring St. Hi-
larity abounds when
good friends shake
up their lives in this
side-splitting, joyful,
laugh-out-loud comedy
from three of the most
widely produced play-
wrights in the U.S., Jessie
Jones, Nicholas Hope and
Jamie Wooten.
Director Engela Ed-
wards said, “It is great
to be working with ma-
ny of my favorite Opera
House regulars, such as
Michelle Billett from Aus-
tin, Rachel Edwards from
Bastrop, Alicia Gust from
Red Rock and Danne Ab-
sher, Will Holcomb, Li-
sa Holcomb from Smith-
ville. While new to the
Opera House stage, McK-
enzie Morrison from Ce-
dar Park and second-tim-
er Joycelyn Schedler from
The Colony, have kept
me in stitches since I met
them at auditions.”
Cast members, along
with Bruce Calvery, Ter-
ri Dyer, David Moore
and Chester Eitze, have
helped create the set
which is an abandoned
church which a group of
Southern characters turn
into a day spa where they
can meet and work on
their lives.
The play runs Fridays
and Saturdays, Aug. 9,
16,17, 23, 24; and Sunday
matinees Aug. 11 and 18.
Tickets are $12 for adults
and $10 for seniors, ac-
tive military, veterans
and students. Tickets are
available on line at Bas-
tropOperaHouse.com or
at the door immediately
before any show.
“The topography really
changes — it’s really great,
with ravines and gulches.”

Park open
for bikes
Biking
continued from A1
Road 1C on the north side,
albeit into the woods, un-
til it hooks up with the
3.6 mile Pine Gulch Loop.
That part of the trail, as
its name implies, makes
Cullen Sartor
site manager
a wide loop up to Old An-
tioch Road, crosses Park
Road 1C and then heads
back south to the starting
point of Winding Wood-
land Trail.
“It’s a great ride,” Sar-
tor said.
Park admission is $4 for
adults and free for ages 12
and under. For more in-
formation, call the park at

Mop-up
crucial
after fire
Fire
continued from A1
hotspots,” Giesalhart said.
“You use chainsaws to cut
down dead trees and rakes
and shovels for raking out
the fire line, using dirt or
sand to cover up hot spots.
If there’s a log that is smol-
dering and you don’t
have water, you just dig a
trench, drop the log in it
and cover it with dirt.”
But there are still no
guarantees that every-
thing is out and vigilance
remains the key.
“Nothing short of a
rainstorm will put the
whole fire out,” Giesal-
hart said.
Smithville fire
mop-up a challenge
Smithville Fire Chief
James Elam said the
232-acre fire off of Mt.
Pleasant View Avenue,
which kicked off July 29
after a lightning strike a
few days earlier, was a
challenge to both stop
and then finally put out.
‘Nothing
short of a
rainstorm will
put the whole
thing out.’
Kevin Giesalhart
Fire Chief
It jumped several fire
breaks, including roads.
“The initial fire was on
Monday, but firefighters
were still out there on Fri-
day mopping up,” Elam
said. “It was a challenge
to get that fire out. With
no access to the north-
west side of the fire, we
had to use a bulldozer to
get in there. It was very
thick woods.”
He said the Texas For-
est Service was of great
assistance, helping to ini-
tially fight the fire, and
then coming back for
re-checking.
“The TFS came back
to get a second glance on
Friday to make sure the
fire was out,” Elam said.
He added the existing
weather conditions added
to the challenge of extin-
guishing hot spots of the
Smithville fire.
“With low humidity
and 20 mph winds and
more, you just have to
watch the fire until we
feel comfortable that it’s
totally out,” Elam said.
“It could be one to four
or five days, or more, de-
pending on how big the
fire is.”
