No place like homecoming parade in Bastrop
66th annual event
features families,
floats, fun.

Dipping and twirling to
the music, 3-year-old Kaj
Myers was having a blast
dancing with his family.
The little boy, with a
huge grin and plenty of
giggles to boot, was spin-
ning and laughing and
keeping his own time in
his own way to the music
flowing out of the speak-
ers, first with his dad,
Sam, then with his mom,
Nikka, and stepbrother,
Gabriel.
Though it was a hot
and humid early August
morning in downtown
Bastrop, nobody minded
because Bastrop is home.
And, as the famous
movie line goes, there’s
no place like home.
They - along with the
folks around them - were
awaiting for the start
of the grand parade at
the 66th annual Bastrop

event.
Among the crowds lin-
ing Main Street Saturday
morning - some chat-
ting with friends and
family or catching up on
the latest news or remi-
niscing with old friends
about days gone by - the
themes of family and a
sense of community to-
getherness were in the
air.
Such was the case with
Corrine Flores. Seat-
ed in a shady, tree-lined
location near the in-
tersection of Main and
Spring streets, Flores and
her children - daughters
Sabrina, 11, Jasmine, 7,
and Destiny, 6, and son,
Shawn, 4 - come to the
parade each year.
“We always enjoy see-
ing all of the floats and
the girls enjoy seeing
the horses,” Flores said
while carefully braiding
Jasmine’s hair.
As the parade began,
the Flores and the Myers
families both had much
to see and enjoy, with the
numerous entries, floats,
bands and things to see
and enjoy as the parade
made its way down Main
Street.
The Bastrop, Elgin and
Smithville fire depart-
ments all had entries in
the parade, as did many
elected officials, includ-
ing Bastrop County Com-
missioner Willie Pina of
Precinct 1 and Bastrop
County Judge Paul Pape,
as well as 423rd Judicial
District Judge Chris Dug-
gan, and entries from
businesses and communi-
ty organizations around
Bastrop and Bastrop
County.
But there also was an
abundance of school spir-
it with the bands from
Bastrop and Cedar Creek
high schools taking part
in the parade, as well
as both schools’ dance
teams.
The members of Bas-
trop High School’s varsi-
ty football team and oth-
er sports were also part
of the parade, as well as
youth sports teams.
For Pat and Dexter
Cantrell of Moss Bluff,
La., seeing the parade
was a nice added touch to
the couples’ visit to Bas-
trop.
Pat Cantrell noted they
had seen an ad for the pa-
rade in Austin and want-
ed to come check it out.
And, they both noted,
they were glad they did.
“We enjoyed the home-
town parade,” she noted,
as they started back to
their car afterward.
She and Dexter both
noticed how many of the
parade goers and partic-
ipants knew one anoth-
er and how many friends
- old and new - greet-
ed friends and family and
waved to people they
knew along the way.
“It seemed like every-
body knew everybody,”
Dexter said.
