B4 The Bastrop Advertiser SATURDAY, AUGUST 10, 2013
SPORTS
Bastrop offensive lineman Jordan Davis (middle, 70) made the short list in a countdown of
District 17-4A’s best offensive linemen, chris dukes/bastrop advertiser
Regionals
the goal
for Creek
Track
continued from B1
pose the biggest chal-
lenge for Cedar Creek.
Last year, both the
Georgetown varsity boys
and girls teams won dis-
trict easily and went on
to state. Bastrop is anoth-
er competitor that might
pose as a threat in dis-
trict. The Bastrop boys
and girls were runner ups
to Georgetown, and are
predicted to be strong
again this year. Howev-
er, Lautenschlager is con-
fident that his teams
can finish within the top
three in district and move
onto regionals.
Last year, Cedar
Creek’s top girl runner,
Amy Wyatt, ran on a bro-
ken leg the entire season,
and is completely healed
now and ready for the up-
coming season. Cedar
Creek’s top boy runner,
Michael Vallejo, who suf-
fered from a cracked fe-
mur in the spring, went
on to place third in the
1500 at nationals this year
in the age group above
him.
Right now the teams
are focused on preparing
for the upcoming season.
“During the summer it
is really about mileage,
so I set a goal for them
to run 500 miles over
the summer,” says Laut-
enschlager. “Most of the
training that they do over
the summer is on their
own, so they have to own
the sport.”
Under Lautenschlager
is assistant coach, Ste-
phen Morales. The var-
sity boys key returners
include: Michael Valle-
jo, Esai Escobedo, Jason
Aguilera, Adrian Cedillo,
Joshua Melendez, Samuel
Needier, Jose Diaz and Ga-
briel Garcia. The return-
ing varsity girls include:
Amy Wyatt, Erica Gonza-
lez, Clara Duggan, Cait-
lyn Opperman, Gracyn
Green, Kirsten Pruett, Ne-
ly Rodriguez, Kaithlyn
Gosch and Allison Grove-
Dip.

Manor
Linemen
continued from B1
needs him worse than ev-
er in 2013.
Right behind him:
Marcus Hudson, Man-
or senior
The Manor backfield
is so loaded with speed,
they need just a few inch-
es of daylight to gash
through a defense and
disappear into the sec-
ondary. Most of the time,
Hudson provides enough
room for a truck. He’s a
5-foot-ll, 265-pound bowl-
ing ball with a low cen-
ter of gravity. His abili-
ty to get down the line on
the Mustangs’ trap play
helped spring many a big
gain last season. His best
quality may be his high
motor. Hudson doesn’t
take plays off and never
stops moving his feet until
the whistle has blown.
The underrated guy:
David Moss, East View
Senior
As with any team build-
ing from the ground
up, the East View Patri-
ots were in need of a cor-
nerstone. They needed
look no further than the
6-foot-3,290-pound of-
fensive lineman. Moss
held his own last year and
stood up to some of the
monster defensive line-
men that occupy District
17-4A. While his forte is
taking down the man right
in front of him, he shows
surprising agility when he
needs to get to the second
level and block lineback-
ers. Moss is the total pack-
age, and if East View is go-
ing to have success this
year, he will be a major
reason why it happens.
Guy youil know by
Week 3: Jordan Davis,
Bastrop senior
This 6-foot-3,
305-pounder spent a lot
of time pulling from one
side of the line to the other
last season, chasing after
players half his size. This
year, with Bastrop’s move
to the spread attack, Davis
will spend a lot more time
in straight-ahead zone
blocking and pass block-
ing schemes, where his
tremendous strength and
size can be more effective.
Look out for Davis to have
a big senior year.
Best Unit: Manor
Alongside Marcus Hud-
son, the Mustangs also re-
turn all-district strong-side
tackle Chad Smith to pro-
vide muscle at the other
end of the line. He’s the guy
they’ll count on to bull an
entrenched defensive line-
man out of his hole and
protect the blindside of his
quarterback on pass plays.
Brandon Dunnermeyer will
also bring the beef at 6-foot
and 270 pounds. This is the
most complete line in the
district at this point.
