Speed blamed
in rollover of
18-wheeler
It wasn’t exactly a happy birthday for Brenda’s owner, Brenda Bush, on Thursday after a fire started in the back of the
restaurant on FM1441. cyndi wright/acn newspaper
The response to the fire around 3:30 p.m. Thursday was
swift and included Bastrop, Elgin, 5 Points and Paige fire
departments, as well as ESD No. 1. The Bastrop County
Sheriff’s Office arrived quickly and helped control traffic in
the area, cyndi wright/acn newspaper

Mennonite Disaster Ser-
vices, Kevin King, will be
the keynote speaker for
the evening, along with
a special video presenta-
tion by Upstart.
In addition, there will
be a raffle and a live auc-
tion of a custom-designed
playhouse built by David
Weekly Homes.
Sponsorships are avail-
able for $l,000-$25,000
and individual tickets are
$75.
To date, the BCLTRT
has successfully con-
structed 75 homes, with
the support and direc-
tion of faith-based disas-
ter organizations such as
the Mennonite Disaster
Service and Christian Aid
Ministries.
“Our community has
been blessed with the
recovery work that has
been done and continues
to be done by volunteers
from across the United
States and Canada,” said
BCLTRT board president
Christine Files.

County Long Term Recovery Team in March. In the foreground, Christine Files, president of

Files said the Menno-
nite Disaster Services,
Christian Aid Ministries
and the NOMAD’s have
agreed to return start-
ing in September to build
an additional 30 homes
for uninsured or under-
insured low-income fire
survivors.
“This fundraiser will
raise the money neces-
sary to purchase the ma-
terials for these homes
to be rebuilt,” she said.
“Let’s show these hard-
working folks who vol-
unteer their time to help
our community recover
that together we can do
this.”
Currently, BCLTRT’s
fundraising goal is set
at $500,000, of which
they have already raised
$340,000.
Last year’s fundraiser
contributed $238,000 to
help fund continuing re-
covery efforts, but Files
said that even though it
has been two years since
the fires, the need has
not gone away.
“The folks that we are
helping right now are
some of the neediest we
have seen,” she said.
“They didn’t come to us.
We found them. These
are folks that have fallen
between the cracks and
given up. Most of them
are elderly.”

Weight shifted
on truck during
turn; cleanup took
several hours.
By Erin Green
egreen@acnnewspapers.
Taking a turn proved a
bit messy for the driver of
an 18-wheeler Tuesday af-
ternoon.
The Bastrop police
and fire departments re-
sponded to the scene of
an overturned 18-wheeler
just after 3 p.m. Tuesday
at the southeast corner of
SH 95 and Loop 150, near
the Sac N Pac store.
Bastrop Police Sgt.
Clint Nagy said the driver,
60-year-old Robert Blow
of Humble, Texas, was
attempting to turn right
from SH 95 onto Loop
150, on his way to Texas
21, when the accident oc-
curred.
Nagy said it appears
Blow was taking the turn
too fast and the load of
borate salts and crystal-
line silica quartz - a non-
hazardous chemical used
to make paint - he was
carrying shifted, caus-
ing the truck to roll on its
side. The truck was car-
rying as much as 47,000
pounds of the substance,
Nagy said.
“If you go too fast and
you go to make a turn,
all that weight is going to
shift and you’re going to
roll,” Nagy said.
Officials from the Tex-
as Department of Trans-
portation and the city’s
public works department
were called in to help
move the truck off the
road and to assist with
the cleanup, which took
several hours and in-
volved bringing in several
truckloads of sand to ab-
sorb the material.
Because the material
was nonhazardous, the
road was not shut down,
but traffic was divert-
ed around the accident,
causing slight delays.
Police issued Blow a ci-
tation for failing to con-
trol his speed.

Library seeks
input for archive
Bastrop Public Li-
brary is working on a
very important project
and needs your help. The
Bastrop County Com-
plex Wildfire Archive was
started soon after the
fires were extinguished,
primarily by collecting
news articles, photos and
video from the Internet,
and the library can con-
tinue doing that for the
foreseeable future. The
ultimate goal is to make
as much of the informa-
tion as possible available
via the web. A series of
informational meetings
are planned for Sept. 13,
20 and 21 about the de-
sign of the archive.

stop signs
on street
Stop signs
continued from A1
the street in a seven-week
period, which was an av-
erage of 3,359 vehicles
per week.
He said there were 547
vehicles that traveled at
speeds greater than five
mph over the posted
speed limit.
The council discussed
with Job the need for
two stop signs - fac-
ing east and west - on
Farm Street at its inter-
section with Chambers
Street. One stop sign was
also suggested for west-
ward-bound traffic along
Farm Street at its in-
tersection with Fayette
Street.
Council member Kay
McAnally moved that City
Manager Mike Talbot pre-
pare an ordinance that
would provide for the
placement of the three
stops signs. The motion
was seconded by Wil-
lie DeLaRosa and carried
unanimously.
