New Game Laws
To Give Better
Bird Snooting
National Laws Will Not
Affect Texas
Seasons
Washington—(INS)—An increase in
the number of woodcock is expected
as a result of new open season gamp
laws for this bird, according to ex-
perts of the Biological Survey of
the Agriculture Department.
Last year it was feared this fowl
would become extinct, and a num-
ber of changes were agreed on for
this year in the migratory bird
treaty act. A general readjustment
in federal seasons on the bird has
resulted. Changes were worked out
so that there would be a minimum
of conflict with state laws, the Agri-
cultural department declared. In
most instances it has been arranged
so the woodcock seasons would open
simultaneously with, or later than
the state seasons on quail and other
upland fowl.
Season Limited.
The hunting period on woodcock
throughout the country this year
will be limited to one month. The
new schedule for open season on
woodcock is as follows:
Maine, Vermont and North Da-
kota—All of October.
New Hampshire, Massachusetts,
Rhode Island and Connecticut—Oc-
tober 20 to November 19.
New York, New Jersey, Pennsyl-
vania, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan,
Wisconsin and Iowa—October 15 to
November 14.
Maryland, District of Columbia,
and Missouri—November 10 to De-
cember 10.
Delaware, Virginia, West Vir-
ginia, Kentucky, Arkansas and Ok-
lahoma—November 14 to Decem-
ber 15.
North and South Carolina, Geor-
gia, Alabama, Mississippi and Lou-
isiana—All of December.
Other Shooting.
Other changes in the bird treaty
effective this year affect water fowl
in Massachusetts and doves in Geor-
gia and Louisiana.
October 1 to January 15 will be
established as the period for hunt-
ing water fowl in Barnstable county,
Massachusetts, south and east of
Cape Cod canal, under the new pro-
visions. This conforms, with the open
season in Dukes and Nantucket
counties.
The open season on mourning
doves in Georgia extends from Oc-
tober 16 to January 31, conforming
with the state season; a split season
on this fowl will be established in
Louisiana, from September 1 to 30
and from November 20 to Janu-
ary 31.

Kansas Has Nine
Candidates Seeking
Job As Governor
Topeka, Kansas—(INS)—With the
nationally hailed bumper wheat crop,
the excitement over the nomination
of “Charlie” Curtis for the vice-
presidency on the republican ticket,
marking the first time the state has
furnished a candidate for a major
political party, and the extra session
of the legislature called in connec-
tion with the federal road aid issue,
candidates running for state offices
in Kansas have received about as
much attention as a book agent in
harvest time.
But with the primary, August 7,
just around the corner, Kansas has
stepped out of the national lime-
light long enough to discover that
she has a gubernatorial position and
congressional offices to fill.
There are nine men in Kansas
who have expressed their desire of-
ficially to succeed Governor Paulen
as the state’s executive.
The Republican party’s candidates
for the nomination are Clyde M.
Reed, John Hamilton, Charles F.
Scott, D. A. N. Chase, lieutenant
governor; Fred J. Voiland of To-
peka, and Frank J. Ryan, secretary
of state.
The democratic candidates are Ed
Hackney of Wellington, Chauncey
B. Little and Jasper Kinkaid.
