Southwest Campus Waiting For
Cafeteria To Open
By Manuel Gonzalez
Recently Southwest Campus suf-
fered a disappointment when their
new cafeteria was not opened follow-
ing the ribbon cutting ceremony on
November 3.
The 3,400 square foot dining facili-
ty was not opened because the City
of San Antonio and the Fire Depart-
ment had not endorsed a certificate
of occupancy for the building.
During a walk through inspection
with the City of San Antonio Fire
Department and an ACCD Project
Manager representative, the Fire
Department cited various elements
through out the building which
needed to be corrected.
According to Dr. Stephen R. Mit-
chell, President, SPC, “The building
needed additional fire alarms, fire
exits and building heaters were plac-
ed too close to existing gas lines.
The sprinkler system also needed to
be corrected.”
The Cafeteria was inspected by
the city Health Department and was
directed to install an ice machine
and additional shelving. The ice
machine has been received.
ACCD is currently in the full
negotiation phase of obtaining a
temporary certificate of occupancy.
Once the dining facility is open,
the manager will be Elizabeth
DeLeon. She is currently employed
by Morrison’s Custom Management
field for four years. There will be six
additional staff hired to support the
day and night shifts at SWC.

Theatre and Fine Arts Building Groundbreaking November 2
By Mauro Segura
Groundbreaking for the Theater
and Fine Arts Building is scheduled
for Friday November 2, as part of
the $85 million bond project for new
construction and renovation for the
Capitol Improvement Program for
the District.
Light construction is in progress.
If you step outside, you will see a
bulldozer and backhoe at work. The
light construction at hand consists
of: ground leveling, fencing, excava-
tion, and discarding of refuse.
A fence has been put up for safety
and bordering reasons. If you drive
on Mittman or Walters Streets, you
probably noticed the street mark-
ings. These markings are for digging
and trenching of utilities to the
worksite.
Initial plans were to remove some
trees, but all trees have been
eliminated to allow more detailed ex-
cavation.
Permits are required on all con-
struction projects from the City of
San Antonio, but SPC has not yet
acquired the water and building per-
mits. ACCD is handling the acquisi-
tion of the permits along with Pro-
ject Manager 3 D/M. All preliminary
construction phases are underway
without violating permit re-
quirements.
Parking has virtually been
eliminated near the construction site
on Nevada and Mittman Streets.
Parking violators are being ticketed
by the city police department on
Mittman Street.
