SPC President Stephen R. Mitchell
The President’s Corner
by Larry Jordan
The news from the president is
good: St. Philip’s is not closing.
Rumor had it that SPC was shutting
down shop because of budget pro-
blems and low student attendance.
The president wants everyone to
know that the rumors are not true,
and SPC is doing well and living in
San Antonio.
The five year master plan that the
administration is working on does
include some changes for the college
In the future, some of the vocational
classes may be moved in order to
give construction workers time to
give the SPC campus classrooms a
new face lift. In an attempt to create
a new and more modern image, not
to mention improving the size and
aesthetic surroundings of the col-
lege, some of the vocational
technical areas will be getting larger
classrooms and better working
facilities.
After the work has been com-
pleted the classes will return to SPC
and continue on as usual.
Some places the classes may be
moved to for a short period include
Kelly AFB Annex and the
Southwest Center.
Now don’t rush out and say SPC
is closing down some of its classes;
this process will take sometime and
formal notice will be given a long
time in advance.
The president is hoping that the
student body and community will
help the SPC reconstruction during
this transitional phase by being pa-
tient and hanging in there with all
the moving from place to place. Just
try and remember that this project
will enhance the community and
give the students a new and improv-
ed atmosphere to work and learn in.
SPC Is Setting The
Pace In Technology
by Michelle Sapenter
It isn’t everyday that a junior col-
lege has the opportunity to offer
something unparalleled by any other
institution in the community. Ap-
propriately, we label such an event a
“trend-setter”—i.e. setting the pace
among other facilities of its kind.
This year St. Philip’s Added the
Ultrasound Program tot he area of
Imaging Radiography, a division of
the Allied Health Department.
Ultrasound is a technique that used
sound waves to create images in
much the same way that radiation is
used in radiology. It is used to view
vital internal organs of the body and
as a means for diagnosing possible
health problems. What is surprising
about this course is that it is the on-
ly program of its kind offered in San
Antonio.
It is with great pride and an enor-
mous sense of duty that SPC offers
the San Antonio community such an
asset. Considering that San Antonio
is a large metropolitan area with
many health care facilities, it is ob-
vious how great an impact the ultra-

Rediologic Technology
sound program will have on the city
and the Southwest region. It is this
kind of change that helps San An-
tonio grow. SPC is making an impor-
tant contribution, and setting a
trend among colleges and univer-
sities in San Antonio.
According to Program Director,
Gaynell Gainer, ultrasound is a
pioneer program. It is a key that
opens doors to practical training
which in the past had been a difficult
task for many interested students to
receive.
Already having conducted a
survey, Gainer points out that St.
Philip’s is “...responding to a need
