Bro. Roy Platt
It was my first time and
I have to admit I didn’t
know what to do or what
to think. I was nervous and
really scared. I didn’t plan
on it being this hard and I
didn’t think it would oc-
cupy my every thought as
it was doing. ‘How would
I come across? Would
I make a fool of myself
despite my best efforts?’
I have not experienced
anything like this before
in my life. I did not sleep
the night before thus sac-
rificing the alertness I was
really going to need. There
was no one else to help and
no one to cue me into quick
solutions to many possible
snafus. ‘Why did I agree?’
I kicked myself for getting
into this situation. How
could I be so stupid and
dumb?
I was 13 and so was
she. She told me that she
wanted me to, get this, are
you ready, HOLD HER
HAND the next time we
met and, being caught off
guard, I said OK (I blame
that new rock group the
Beatles for their new num-
ber 1 hit ‘I Want To Hold
Your HAND’ at the time).
So when the time came and
I saw Pat we sat down on
the back porch. It prob-
ably took me another hour
to figure out how to do this
‘hand holding thang’ with-
out sacrificing ‘coolness.’
Slowly, with a rising tone,
she said, “Well?” Silence
gripped the moment and
I coughed. I knew it was
now or never. So, I went
for it and our hands caught
with intertwined fingers.
It was strange, different,-
-and, actually, beginning
to be enjoyable. After a
few hand holding dates on
the back porch it became
natural and comfortable
and I looked forward to
holding Pat’s hand when-
ever I could. I began to
think that I was made for
holding her hand.
Well, that was many
years ago since that first
time and I must confess
I have held many a girl’s
hand in my courting years
until I found the right one
and we’ve been holding
hands for the last (blank)
years and I have never
regretted what the Lord
brought my way.
Now I was raised in
church and it has never
been strange to me. The
songs, the worship, the fel-
lowship, revivals, vacation
bible schools, camps, etc. I
can’t imagine what it’s like
to have never been, or, to
be going for the very first
time no matter the age. The
first time visit—not know-
ing what to do or think,
nervous, scared, hard to do,
out of your character. What
would you do? What would
you say? Kicking yourself
for agreeing to go with a
friend, no one to bale you
out. What would others
think? What would I do if
someone who really knows
me was there? Questions
and anxiety I’m sure meet
the first timer in any church
situation.
That first time, or the
second, or the third visit
will start feeling like you
have just clasped hands
and have interlocked fin-
gers. Why, of all things,
you realize that it could ac-
tually be enjoyable and not
the dread that you thought
it to be. You begin to think
in your head and realize
that you were made for
this. Yep, that’s right. You
were made for the church.
Seems logical to me. God
made you and God made
the church. Sitting where
I am that seems like—
two hands reaching out
clasping with intertwined
fingers. Going to church—
you will probably never re-
gret what the Lord brought
your way. You were made
to hold HIS hand.

Stumbling through the dark house, I finally found the flashlight and made my way out to the garage. I pulled the cord over my head that released the garage door
from the chain drive and heaved the garage door upward.
The cool night air burst in around me as the moonlight flooded into the garage. I stepped to the side of the garage and wrestled the portable generator out to the
driveway where I prepared it for use.
After a few minutes of preparation, the generator was ready to go, so I yanked and yanked on the pull cord. It finally lurched into action, but I noticed immediately
that something was wrong. The strong smell of gasoline filled the garage and alarmed me. I flashed my light toward the generator and saw right away that the fuel
shut-off valve was leaking gasoline steadily.
I knew right away that I had to turn off the machine due to the fuel problem. We would have to go without electricity all night and hope that I would be able to
get the generator fixed before we would have another power outage.
I followed the light of my flashlight back into the house and broke the bad news that we would be without any power for the rest of the evening.
We, too, face a power outage in our spiritual lives when we try to get along without regularly reading and studying God’s word. Hebrews 4:12 says, “Lor the word
of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and
intentions of the heart.”
Don’t try to live your life without having access to the fuel that can deliver God’s power into your world. God’s word will release His energy into your life to
encourage you, build you up and hold you accountable as He directs your steps.
Grace and peace from
our brother, Jesus. Sunday
was the 28th Sunday of
Ordinary Time. The rain
was nice last night. My
rain gauge read U inch.
We had small crowds at
both Paxton and Joaquin.
At both churches we had
a Gideon speaker. Stan
Davis, a teacher at Car-
thage and a Gideon gave a
message about the work of
Gideon International. Stan
gave some very interesting
examples of the work of
the Gideons. Both Joa-
quin and Paxton Method-
ist budget support for this
worthwhile cause. Our
dear friend, Doc Watson
was a long time Gideon
and I remember him visit-
ing my classroom and leav-
ing the small Gideon New
Testament plus Psalms
and Proverbs for the kids
who wanted one. We re-
ally appreciate the work
of this organization and we
appreciate Stan visiting our
churches.
My sermon today was
again based on the book
of Job. Today the Old
Testament Scripture was
from Job 23 and didn’t
focus on Job’s suffering
but Job’s search for God.
The ancient Rabbis said
that Job was Everyman—
every person who at some
time or another felt that
God was not listening or
didn’t feel God’s presence.
We had several wonder-
ful surprises at Joaquin.
Dennis Lreeman came and
played the organ. Unfortu-
nately we didn’t do a great
job singing the hymns
this morning. But it was
great to hear the beauti-
ful organ music. And it
is always a blessing to
see Jason Shippey’s kind
smile. Jason is a wonder-
ful person and it has been
a blessing to get to know
him. Charles and Lrancis
Lreeman came this morn-
ing and it was great to see
them. There move back to
Joaquin has been slowed
somewhat because Charles
had hid replacement sur-
gery. Charles looks great
and is getting around very
good. He said his doctor
said he will be able to put
down the cane in a couple
of months.
Several small Meth-
odist churches including
Paxton and Joaquin will
have its annual Charge/
Church Conference this
Tuesday at PUMC Center.
Rev. McMahon will be the
presiding elder. The con-
ference will begin at 6:00.
Thursday at 8:00 will be
our weekly Prayer Break-
fast. Joaquin Methodist
will have a Halloween get-
together on Halloween at
6:00. Everyone is invited
as the Youth Group will
have hot dogs and other
eats. Kids are invited to
come dressed in costume.
We are asking the grown-
ups to bring a sack of candy
so we can help fill up the
kid’s goody bags. This
month we are collecting
jars of peanut butter and
jelly for the food bank
at the Christian Services
House.
If you are looking for
a place to worship and a
place to call home I hope
you will consider Paxton or
Joaquin Methodist. I saw
this quote from John Wes-
ley in an email from anoth-
er pastor. “Whoever you
are, in whatever faith you
were bom, whatever creed
you profess; if you come to
this house to find God you
are welcome here.” Both
churches are very open and
inviting churches that take
to heart the idea of “Open
Doors, Open Hearts, Open
Minds.”
Services at Paxton Unit-
ed Methodist Church begin
at 9:30 with Sunday School
at 10:30. Spanish language
services are at 11:00 with
the Rev. Carmelo Domin-
quez delivering the mes-
sage. Sunday School at
Joaquin Methodist is 10:00
and worship service begins
at 11:00.

and God’s Speed.
