GRACE
COMMUNITY
HEALTHCARE
MINISTRY
Weekly clinics
begin today
The Grace Commu-
nity Healthcare Min-
istry will have a fam-
ily nurse practitioner
who will hold weekly
clinics beginning to-
day.
The ministry's of-
fice manager, Pamela
Palmer, said the prac-
titioner, Linda Brash-
er, will see around 20
patients. The ministry
also has had two den-
tal X-ray machines do-
nated that they expect
to receive shortly, "so
our dental lab should
be in place very soon,"
Palmer said.
"We're so excited,"
said Palmer. Let Wood
County know "we are
taking new patients."
Planning for
May Days
has begun
The Mineola Cham-
ber of Commerce is
seeking individuals,
chamber members and
non-members, who
would like to volun-
teer their talents in
supporting and orga-
nizing the coming May
Days celebration.
The event will be
held Friday and Satur-
day, May 3 and 4.
"We invite anyone
who wants to help,"
said the chamber's ad-
ministrative director
Pam Franklin.
"It takes a lot of vol-
unteer hours to put this
together and make it
run smoothly," Frank-
lin wrote in an email.
A meeting to form
committees was set for
Tuesday, Jan. 8, too late
for the Monitor dead-
line, at the chamber of-
fice but it is not too late
to offer to volunteer.
Those interested may
call Franklin at 903-
569-2087. She can also
be reached through
email at chamber®
mineola.com.

Medicare
From page 2
see only a slight increase
in their premiums for
physician visits and out-
patient services.
Medicare deductibles
will increase modestly.
Besides new premi-
ums, there are new de-
ductibles for 2013. These
are the amounts you pay
out of pocket each year
before Medicare kicks in
and covers its share of
the bills.
The Part B deductible
for doctor appointments
and other outpatient care
will be $147, compared
with $140 this past year.
The Part A deductible for
up to 60 days of inpatient
hospital services will
increase about 2 percent,
from $1,156 in 2012 to
$1,184 in 2013.
If you're dissatisfied
with your Medicare
Advantage plan, you can
quit it beginning Jan. 1.

ment" period allows

private industry they'd
have been fired long ago
because of ineptness.
Most of us are willing
to admit we're not Phi
Beta Kappa level think-
ers but we know when
you to return to the
traditional fee-for-service
Medicare program be-
tween Jan. 1 and Feb. 14.
You can also pick a drug
plan to go with your new
coverage.
A word of caution here:
There are a few things
you can't do during the
six-week disenrollment
period. You can't switch
from one Medicare Ad-
vantage plan to another.
Nor can you switch from
the traditional Medicare
program to an Advan-
tage plan. Most people
will need to wait until
the annual enrollment
period in the fall to make
either of those changes.
You'll pay less for
walkers, wheelchairs
and other medical
equipment.
You're likely to reap
hundreds of dollars in
savings each year from
the new way that Medi-
care will pay for medical
equipment like home
hospital beds, walkers
and wheelchairs. The
reform takes effect in
dozens of additional
metropolitan areas start-
ing July 1.
The government is
something doesn't smell
right and at the moment
our leadership, on both
sides of the political
landscape, appear as
though they'd rather sell
us the Brooklyn Bridge
than build it.
More and more it ap-
pears they live in a make
believe world found only
in works of fiction.

replacing an outdated
fee schedule with a new
system that requires
equipment suppliers to
bid for Medicare's busi-
ness. Beneficiaries have
enjoyed substantial price
reductions in the first
nine areas where Medi-
care has tried competi-
tive bidding.
Among the next areas
to see lower costs on
medical equipment and
supplies beginning this
summer will be Austin-
Round Rock-San Marcos,
Beaumont-Port Arthur,
El Paso, Houston-Sugar
Land-Baytown, McAl-
len-Edinburg-Mission
and San Antonio-New
Braunfels.
All areas of the country
will benefit from com-
petitive pricing within a
few years.
As I said, this is just
a quick look at Medi-
care's more noteworthy
changes. The "Medicare
and You 2013" handbook
you recently received in
the mail has a complete
summary. If you need
a copy, ask for one at
1-800-MEDICARE, or
visit medicare.gov and
download it.
When someone wants
to run for office the first
thing asked of them
should be, "What are
your qualifications?"
And not "how much
money can you raise?"
Chamber’s
directory is
opportunity
for promotion
Each year the Mineola Monitor, in conjunction with
the chamber of commerce, creates a Chamber Buy-
er's Guide and Membership Directory that includes
chamber members.
Mineola Monitor Publisher Joyce Hathcock says
the directory is an important source of information
for residents, visitors and potential visitors and that
each chamber member will have two listings in the
directory, one alphabetical and the other by category.
Both are free to chamber members.
There is no cost to the chamber for production or
the distribution that is expected to take place in early
February through
the newspaper. It
will also be made
available at the
chamber office, the
Mineola Main Street
office and in area
businesses through
the year.
The directory is
also inserted in in-
formation packets
sent by the chamber
to potential visitors.
Hathcock said this
is a chance to pro-
mote a business to
thousands of read-
ers throughout the year. Beyond the free listings in
the publication, there are opportunities to promote
one's business further through the purchase of dis-
play advertisements in the publication.
For more information regarding the available op-
portunities chamber members should contact Vicki
Duke or Joyce Hathcock at 903-569-2442 or vduke®
