Violent crime spree ends with death of
MOTEL EMPLOYEE IN JOAQUIN
Officers arrest couple after a pursuit through Montgomery County at US 59 and SH105
Bobby Dewayne Grubbs, Age 42
Deedra Michelle Grubbs, Age 39
A violent crime spree
started on Thursday morn-
ing, April 26, in The Wood-
lands, TX, and culminated
in a deadly motel shooting
in Joaquin, TX.
Authorities say that
39-year-old Deedra Mi-
chelle Grubbs knocked on
the door of a home where
she had previously been
employed as a housekeeper
and began chatting with
the homeowner. Bobbie
Grubbs, her husband and
accomplice, then forced
his way into the home
where both suspects as-
saulted the homeowner,
attempted to strangle her,
tied her up, and burglarized
the home, allegedly steal-
ing weapons and jewelry
from the home.
Then they fled to Joa-
quin, TX, near the Loui-
siana state line, and spent
Thursday night at the
County Inn. Friday morn-
ing, Bobby Grubbs am-
bushed three employees
who were cleaning Room
129 at the motel, shooting
each in the head.
The Shelby County
Sheriff’s Department re-
ceived a 911 call at 9 AM
Friday morning, April 27,
concerning a shooting at
the Joaquin Country Inn on
Hwy 7 in Joaquin, Texas.
According to Sheriff New-
ton Johnson, there were
three gunshot victims. One
of the victims, Martha
Beatriz Acevedo-Chan,
was deceased on arrival,
one of the victims was life
flighted to LSU hospital in
Shreveport, and the other
one was taken to Shelby
Regional Hospital in Cen-
ter. Both are expected to
recover. All three employ-
ees were housekeepers.
The Grubbs then stole one
of the victim’s cars and
money from the lobby cash
register.
Law enforcement
blocked off the entrance
to the property as they
searched and secured the
area. Texas Rangers were
also on scene and Depart-
ment of Public Safety was
on the alert looking for
the stolen car. Joaquin
ISD Superintendent Phil
Worsham put his school
campus, which is less than
a half-mile from the motel,

on lockdown. All stu-
dents were in their class-
rooms and all the doors and
gates are locked. Shelby
County Sheriff’s officers
first believed the Grubbs
had fled to Louisiana -
Shelby County is located
in East Texas, next to the
Louisiana state line - and
notified other agencies to
coordinate a search, John-
son said.
The couple was on the
run for a good portion of
the day. The couple was
spotted in Montgomery
County Friday afternoon
and law enforcement, in-
cluding the Montgomery
County Sheriff’s Office
SWAT team, pursued them
into Liberty County, where
they were stopped at Texas
105 East and U.S. 59 after
the road was blocked by
officers, a spokesman with
the Liberty County Sher-
iff’s Office said. Mont-
gomery County authorities
arrested the couple,Bobby
Dewayne Grubbs, 42, and
his wife, Deedra Michelle
Grubbs, 39, Friday after-
noon after the stolen ve-
hicle was spotted in Mont-
gomery County. Bobby
Grubbs was released from
parole in 1990 after serv-
ing a 15-year prison sen-
tence for burglary of a
building in Harris County,
according to Public Data.
Deedra Grubbs has no list-
ed prior criminal history.
The couple reportedly have
two children.
Bobby Grubbs, 42 has
been charged with retalia-
tion in Montgomery Coun-
ty, aggravated robbery in
Harris County, and capital
murder in Shelby County.
Wife Deedra Grubbs is
charged with burglary of a
habitation.
Meet the Candidates in Tenaha
Operation 5 Loaves and
2 Fish hosted a "Meet the
Candidates" on Sat. April
28, 2012. Natalie Harris
welcomed everyone and
thanked many commu-
nity churches, businesses,
and individuals for their
support. She especially
thanked all the candidates
for coming.
Mrs. Brenda Farmer
led the cake auction with
the help of Ms. Shelby
County Junior Teen Jaden
Washington and Beta Club
Member Bria Nelson. The
cake auction was a great
success thanks to the can-
didates. Over $2,000 was
raised with Karen Price
and State Representative
Wayne Christian being the
top bidders.
Tenaha ISD Board of
Trustees:
Mr. Bo Morris stated “I
have served on the school
board for twenty seven
years and as President of
the Board for the last seven
years. Seven years ago we
got a new superintendant
and we started making
changes and this building
is one of those changes.
I want to continue to see
Tenaha grow. On May 12,
I would like your support
for the school board.”
Robert Barton said, “I
am a 1975 graduate of
Tenaha ISD. I was on the
School Board for twelve
years and moved away
and am now back. We
have great administrators,
great school board, great
teachers and students and
I would like to be a part
of that growing. My son
graduated from here. We
give a scholarship every
year to two graduates for
the last ten years to honor
my son’s memory. I am all
about helping the kids and
I employ several of them
at work. I would appreciate
your vote.”
Mayor;
Orinthia Johnson stated,
“I am running for Mayor
of this great town. I gradu-
ated from Tenaha ISD in
1988. Now is the time for
leadership and to take on
the city’s toughest chal-
lenges. I would like to have
a park for the kids, clean
up Tenaha, encourage new
businesses to create new
jobs, and build motels so
oil field workers can stay
here. I know these are high
goals but if the city council
and I can work together I
know it can be done. I am
prepared to take on the
tough fight and make a dif-
ference in people’s lives.
For new leadership and
ideas, please vote for me.”
Mayor George Bowers
said, “I have been around
for a day or two and your
Mayor for 56 years. A lot
of people working for me
have made a lot of good
things happen. We used
to only have one well, one
gauge, and an old cattle
trough that made water
come on, and now we
have four wells, and a new
million-dollar sewer plant.
There are a lot of things
still to do. I think I have
two more years in me and
I ask you to support me for
Mayor of Tenaha.”
Sheriff candidates:
Willis Blackwell said,
“I am a retired game war-
den and have lived in Shel-
by County since 1980. My
major goal when I moved
here was to leam about this
county. I think that’s one
of our downfalls at this
time. We are not honored
to have enough local law
enforcement people come
in that are raised here that
By: Rhonda Samford
know the county. So you
have no other alternative
than to hire people from
outside the county. Those
people, to me, don’t need
to go to the Sheriff’s office
and wait on a call. They
need to ride this county and
find out where everybody
lives. All they have to do is
stop at people’s houses and
meet those people. I think
there is a lot of training
that needs to take place.
I don’t think you want to
see a deputy car parked at
the Sheriff’s office. I don’t.
Five or six deputy cars
parked there doesn’t show
me any patrol. They need
to be out. You see them go-
ing down your road you’ll
know they are working.
That’s my major goal at the
Sheriff’s office. I would
appreciate your vote.”
Josh Tipton stated, “I
was born and raised in
Shelby County in Timp-
son. I was your patrol
deputy until the later part
of 2011. Concentrating on
being a good Sheriff and a
little less on politics is one
of my main goals. I would
put radar back in the patrol
cars so we can monitor our
school zones and if I’m
elected, you’ll see SCSO
cars in the school zones.
