A taste of
Mineola
DORIS NEWMAN
Sometimes things work out. With the crazy win-
ter-one-day, spring-like weather the next, Saturday
happened to be an extremely pleasant day to be out
and tootling around in Mineola. It was the first time
our newest daughter-in-law, her mother and I had
had a free Saturday to just goof off here in town -
and we did thoroughly enjoy it.
It's fun to be able to take pride in the town where
you live, and I can not remember a time since we've
lived here in the early 1970s that we haven't been
able to. At first it was the pretty town and the lakes.
Then came the civic center, the gazebo, renovated
sidewalks, depot and etc. The nature preserve seems
to be a particularly impressive sight to our visi-
tors and, having seen a few different state parks, I
understand why.
Things lined up Saturday and we started the day
off with a very enjoyable lunch where we, joined
by our fellows, fueled up for the afternoon on some
of the most popular fare in town. Lots of the faces
there weren't familiar, but as usual, there were also
quite a few we did know who said hello. Natives of
Los Angeles, our guests noticed the contrast in the
atmosphere - the lack of connection in the city to
the one here in Texas and Mineola to which they are
adapting.
As we spent the good part of the afternoon in one
shop, I gently reminded them there are lots more
similar to that. Each shop seems to have its own per-
sonality, its own strong point to appreciate. Sadly,
one of the shop owners did tell us the stores closed
at 5:00 -1 asked hoping for a different answer. So
by 5:00 we were leaving our fourth store with a few
more purchases in hand and still ready for more
shopping experiences.
As we walked along sidewalk window shopping
at the Johnson Street storefronts, there was a woman
inside one of the shops. She noticed us, came to
the door and invited us in, telling us she was just
working late anyway. It was such a nice gesture and
yes, we later realized two of us had decided that we
would find something to buy in there.
A bit later the same thing happened as we carried
more purchases toward my car on Commerce Street.
Folks inside a store noticed us and again, went to
their door and invited us in. Once we were inside
the new business owners welcomed us and we
became quite acquainted by the time we left. Found
some beautiful pieces in there as well.
It was a shop-until-you-drop kind of day and
that doesn't mean just one's energy level. While the
pretty shops, the friendly folks and desserts left a
sweet taste, the final instances of hospitality capped
off a beautiful day. To our Mineola readers, if you
haven't taken a day-trip trip to your hometown, I
highly recommend you do so. I'm sure the company
had a lot to do with my enjoyment level this week-
end, but I'd almost guarantee youll enjoy yourself
too if you'll just take the time.
Letters to the Editor
Dear editor,
The year 2013 has been a great
and fruitful year of achieve-
ment for the Lord for the Bread
of Life Ministries. We thank all
the churches and members who
host our monthly Breakfast with
a Heart, donors faithfully giving,
volunteers giving their time and
prayer partners praying unceas-
ingly. Special thanks to The Mineo-
la Monitor for getting the word out
for all our activities.
We are able to serve about 300
families on the first and third Tues-
day of every month. Thanksgiving
Day we gave away 420 meals and
Christmas Day 400 lunches. With-
out the help of our community we
will not be able to fulfill our com-
mitment.
We are looking forward with
great expectation this year to part-
ner with you all to help fight hun-
ger in Wood County.
God bless and keep you always,
Kenneth Teo
Bread of Life Ministries
Letter to the editor
Late last week Harold Clark Sim-
mons, a native of Golden, died and
Wood County lost one of the most,
if not the most, generous person to
Wood County and to many other
diversified causes in the United
States.
Mr. Simmons was a very modest
man who never wanted his name
placed on any building but usu-
ally named them for his parents
or his wife. He had a lifelong in-
terest in education instilled in him
by his parents, Reuben Leon Sim-
mons and Fair ess Clark Simmons;
his Dad being superintendent of
schools at Golden and his mother
an English teacher.
Many projects, too many to men-
tion, in Wood County have re-
ceived financial help with their
project or program.
Mr. Simmons always support-
ed the Sweet Potato Festival and
brought it national acclaim when
we told Oprah Winfrey, a neigh-
bor of the Simmons in California,
about the Festival and Oprah sent
a crew to Golden and featured it on
her Show.
The writer was honored to work
with him when he agreed that the
Wood County Historical Commis-
sion could apply for a Texas His-
torical Subject Marker for his par-
ents and a local historical marker
for Mr. Simmons. Mr. Simmons
and members of his family attend-
ed the dedication of these markers
and were visibly overcome with
emotion to see his parents receive
such honor.
Mr. Simmons will be greatly
missed but being the generous per-
son he was, a foundation was set
up to carry on the charitable work
and projects started in his lifetime.

cal Commission
