Grace and peace irom
our brother, Jesus. Sunday
was the Fifth Sunday of
Easter. The Gospel Les-
son from John 15 speaks
of the Christ being the
vine and his followers as
the branches. In the First
Lesson from Act 8 we see
an Ethiopian becomes a
Follower of the Way and
he is baptized. But it is
the Second Lesson from
1 John 4 that really ties
everything together. John
tells the early church that
we are to love one another
because love comes from
God. God is love. That is
the wonderful message ot
the Christ. “God is love,
and those who abide in
love abide in God.”
We had small crowds at
both Paxton and Joaquin
Methodist Churches this
morning. We sure hope
that Keith gets to feel-
ing better soon. Also we
pray that Roy is getting
stronger each day. At both
churches we celebrated
Communion. At Joaquin
Methodist took up a col-
lection for the work of
Christian Services. This
month both churches will
be collecting cans of fruit
to fill the shelves at the
Christian Services House.
Last Wednesday the
Joaquin Church was hon-
ored to host a luncheon
for the graduating seniors
at Joaquin. I taught most
of them in the 4th Grade
and it was sure nice to see
them all grown up! We
had a wonderful lunch and
then took many pictures
in the Memorial Garden.
I really appreciate every-
one who cooked, served,
and cleaned up after the
luncheon.
Wednesday night was
Family Night and we had
a good crowd. It was great
to have Allison and Ginger
with us Wednesday. Thurs-
day we had our weekly
Prayer Breakfast. The will
be no Prayer Breakfast as
I will have family in from
the great state of Colorado.
I think the breakfast regu-
lars are still playing to meet
at the Cafe Thursday. This
past Thursday was “Pickin
& Praisin” at Tenalia Meth-
odist. Ms. Hilda said there
61 folks there and I saw
some good Joaquin folks
there.
Last Friday was the
first Friday of May so we
had our monthly Birthday
Party at Pine Grove Nurs-
ing Center. We had volun-
teers from Tenaha, Paxton,
and Joaquin Methodist
Churches. Janet made a
beautiful as well as deli-
cious cake for the party.
Rev. Robert Warr brought
a short message and we
had plenty of singing. We
also had gifts for those cel-
ebrating birthdays in May.
Saturday many volunteers
spent there morning mow-
ing, bush hogging, weed-
ing, burning brush, and
hauling off junk from Joa-
quin Methodist. Thanks
to those who came and
worked so hard.
Services at Paxton Unit-
ed Methodist Church begin
at 9:30 with Sunday School
at 10:30. Spanish language
services are at 11:00 with
the Rev. Carmelo Domin-
quez delivering the mes-
sage. Sunday School at
Joaquin Methodist is 10:00
and worship service begins
at 11:00. Our website is
at joaquinumc.com. Our
web master is Jason Gill.
Our email address is at
j oaq uin urn c@h otm ai 1 .com
and prayer requests can be
sent there and we will post
them on our website. Take
care and God’s Speed.

[Ok—I tried to be cute.
So here is the unscrambled
version of last weeks ar-
ticle.]
It’s hard to keep things
straight these days. There
is so much technology it
just absolutely befuddles
me. If it starts with an “I”
...I’m lost. Like I-Pad,
I-Pod, I-Phone. These
‘T things can do more
than what I can wrap my
thinkin’s around.
When I was growing up
the only ‘pad’ I knew as
the Big Chief writing pad,
or the launch ‘pad’ of our
fledgling American space
ventures. The only ‘pod’s
I knew of were the seed
pods of some weed. And
the only phones I knew
about went rmg-rmg al-
ter which you pick up the
receiver and say ‘hello’ to
a live person (if it was long
distance you made sure
you hollered).
And then there is ‘Twit-
ter’ in which you ‘tweet’.
The only ‘tweet’ I ever
knew of in my life was the
cartoon character Tweety
Bird that constantly out-
smarted Sylvester the Cat.
I was asked by some juve-
nile ‘do you tweet?’ and
I told him I don’t know a
lot about bird calling. He
just shook his head and left
muttering something about
a ‘mow run’ (maybe you
can figure that one out).
Texting I’ll never un-
derstand... the sending
ot typed messages from a
sale-phone(?) to someone
sitting next to ya short
circuits both of my brain
cells (named ‘Gertrude
and Hecliff’). I took 2
years of Typing 1 in high
school smokin’ the manual
typewriter at 70 words per
minute. But today’s mu-
tant texters can outdo any
1960’s teletype machine
with no sweat. I have
seen genetically altered
teens type entire para-
graphs on micro-keyboards
so fast that it could only
be accomplished by some
‘Sasquatch-like’ freak of
nature. In comparison, It
took me at least 25 min-
utes to send a message to
Lookie-Here-Woman say-
ing “cook my food”, and
even then, she didn’t reply
like a good text’er should.
(Go figure).
I can sense world peace
finally coming about with
Face Book. I’ve been
asked by a lot of people
“would you be my friend?”
What I thought was just
a simple invitation by
someone asking to be their
friend I found out that on
Face Book you always ask
someone to be your friend.
You acquire this universe
of friends communicating
with each other with no
inkling of ever wanting to
see each other. More than
one person has come up
to me and asked about my
Face Book page. Dude...
the only Face Book I ever
knew were mug shots at
the sheriff’s office and
they weren’t your normal
BFF types.
My Space is confus-
ing as well. Why in the
world do I want to tell
anybody any of the follow-
ing? ‘Okay, I just got out
of the shower and now I am
going to cut my toe nails.’
‘I’m through cutting my
toe nails and now I am go-
ing to cook dinner. ’ ‘I just
cleaned the cat litter box.’
‘I am now going to bake a
cake.’ People who post this
kind of stuff need therapy,
or a hobby, or both.
Anyone who says they
can’t understand the Bible
but is totally adept to the
workings of our mod-
ern technological social
networks ain’t shootin’
straight. If you can de-
cipher the stuff on this
printed page then you are
of enough brain function to
understand many things...
the Bible being one of
them. Life with God is not
a confused mesh of tech-
nological mish mash but
the answer that takes our
confused lives and brings
some sense to everyday
living.
The Psalmist David is in
my camp... “Your words
give understanding to the
simple.” Lord knows...
this technological millen-
nium is proving me to be
pretty simple.

Proverbs 31:30-31;
“Charm is deceptive, and
beauty does not last; but
a woman who fears the
LORD will be greatly
praised. Reward her for
all she has done. Let her
deeds publicly declare her
praise.”
I remember the day
when I was 4 years old and
my brother, 8, that the let-
ter came which ripped our
world apart. My Dad, who
was in the military sta-
tioned in England, wrote
to ask Mom for a divorce.
Everything turned upside
down for us that day. Mom
would trade the apron of a
homemaker for the smock
of a factory worker as she
went to work in order to
support us.
Mom would have to
dig very deep to find the
wherewithal to raise two
young sons alone. It would
be a long, hard road filled
with many trials and tribu-
lations. One thing was
for sure, she wasn’t going
to do it alone. She im-
mediately threw herself
into the loving arms of
her Lord and Savior, Jesus
Christ. He would be her
strength in the long days of
labor at home and at work.
He would comfort her as
she dealt with the pres-
sure of being a single par-
ent living on a shoestring
budget. With the Lord’s
help, she found a strength
and determination deep
within that propelled her
ever forward against the
stiff winds that she faced
head-on. A fire of tenac-
ity seemed to crackle just
below the surface as she
toughened enough to be a
firm, guiding hand for two
hardheaded boys.
Mom never relented
and did her best to raise
us up to the Lord as she
made sure that we were in
church every Sunday, rain
or shine, often against our
violent protests. I recall
seeing her break down
during the meal bless-
ing in those times when
she didn’t know how she
would pay the bills that
we faced. Mom never
apologized or shied away
from showing us how she
depended on the Lord for
everything.
I thank God that He saw
fit to give me a mother who
cared enough about me to
raise me and my brother
up to know Him and to
trust in Him. Although she
wasn’t able to be the doting
mother that she wanted to
be, I know that she loves
me because I’ve felt her
firm hand of correction on
my backside and had her
live out an unwavering
faith in God right before
my eyes.
Thank you, Mom, for
caring enough about me
to show me the way, even
though you had to fight
against me throughout the
process. Surely, your re-
ward will be great. I love
you. Happy Mother’s Day!
