3 Apr 1986 - Good
Gossip. By Neuville Bog-
ard. This subject is likely
to get me in trouble as it is
one we are all guilty of but
like to label it on the oth-
er fellow. What I always
wanted to know is who is
this fellow named “They,”
as he is the one that said
it. I guess the most helpful
people are the ones that
stay by their radios all
day and night to see who
the police have caught so
they can pass it on to their
friends and neighbors.
Like I say, this is univer-
sal and getting more so as
even your newspapers are
quick to print your misfor-
tune, but I don’t remember
reading where one of these
poor souls proved that they
were innocent and not
guilty. They don’t print
that part. I am well aware
that this is nothing new and
will be going on long after
you and I are forgotten.
Confucius say, “One who
criticize others just might
be the one who gives the
next party.” Another old
saying is, “Curiosity killed
the cat.”
2 Jan 1931 - Attends
Fam ily Reunion at Tenaha.
Mr. and Mrs. T. P. Todd
and children attended a
family reunion Sunday at
the home of Mrs. Todd’s
father, J. S. Baldwin of
Tenaha. The occasion was
a family reunion and also
observed in honor of Mr.
Baldwin’s birthday anni-
versary. A bountiful dinner
was served and the day was
enjoyed by forty-eight chil-
dren and grandchildren.
14 Feb 1929 - Chamber
of Commerce Active in
Community Development
Work. Renewed interest
in Chamber of Commerce
work was demonstrated
Monday night when a large
crowd attended the regular
meeting of the organiza-
tion. A spirit of optimism
prevailed among the large
crowd; and as the different
propositions were pre-
sented, the fact was clearly
demonstrated that Timpson
has one of the liveliest
chambers of commerce
in East Texas and that its
members are on the job to
put on a greater campaign
of community building.
President J. E. Blankenship
presided. Secretary Nich-
ols gave reports on several
matters of importance fol-
lowing which committee
reports of interest were
made. The airport commit-
tee reported that possibly
the only delay now in ad-
vancing the airport project
is the lack of a surveyor.
The parties owning one
desirable plot of ground
are planning the construc-
tion of a port as soon as
the proper surveying can
be done. The fair commit-
tee asked for further time
which was granted. Also,
the bandstand committee
was retained and given
further time to work out
their problems. G. C. Mc-
David made a report for
the committee in charge of
arrangements for entertain-
ing the American Legion
convention. A motion was
carried that the Cham-
ber of Commerce furnish
barbecue dinner and that
the committee composed
of G. C. McDavid, W. F.
Corry and Austin Stephens
be retained for the purpose
of having this dinner pre-
pared and served. The Ty-
ler Dairy Show for March
3-6 was discussed and it
was agreed that be offered
those who are interested
in any form of dairying to
attend this meeting. The
government’s recommen-
dation that all encourage
the reduction of cotton
acreage and the improve-
ment of the cotton staple
was discussed at length.
In this discussion, Mr.
Harry Watkins represent-
ing the diversified cotton
seed breeders of Texas, by
invitation, gave an educa-
tional talk on the growing
of staple cotton. Amotion
was made and carried that
the chamber of commerce
go on record endorsing
the government’s plan of
reduction in acreage and
better staple and that we
encourage the sale of im-
proved cotton seed and
get behind any dealer that
will buy and distribute a
carload of any approved
type. Motion was made and
carried that the Chamber
of Commerce enter heart-
ily this year upon a rural
improvement program and
that the secretary select a
committee to have charge
of this feature of the work,
and that the chamber of
commerce offer its services
through this committee
to any school community
in the Timpson trade ter-
ritory. It is hoped by this
service that good may be
done in encouraging com-
munity organizations for
standardizing marketable
products of all kinds, and
for general community
welfare. The committee
appointed to have charge of
this work is E. H. Hebert,
H. R. Fory, and Prof. K. N.
Koonce. They will be ex-
pected to draft the service
of such other help as may
be needed. Any commu-
nity desiring help for any
community meeting will
feel at liberty to call upon
Mr. Hebert’s committee
and the service will be
rendered. [Authors Note:
The C of C was active back
then as they are now under
the directions of President
Paul Smith. Good work.

16 Aug 1968 - Vows
Unite Jeanie Green, J.
T. Rhodes. The Rev. D.
S. Neal officiated at the
double-ring ceremony that
united in marriage Miss
Jeanie Green and J. T.
Rhodes on August Third.
The wedding was held in
the home of the bride’s
parents before an arch of
white gladiola and fern.
The bride was given in
marriage by the father,
John Perry Green. She
wore a floor-length gown
fashioned of champagne
satin and bodice of lace
featuring scalloped neck,
elbow-length bell sleeves,
and banded on the bot-
tom with scalloped lace.
Her shoulder-length veil
was made onto a cluster
of rose petals and was
studded with seed pearls.
A single strand of pearls,
a gift of the groom, ac-
cented her costume. Mrs.
Bobby Brunson, sister of
the bride, played the tradi-
tional wedding march. For
the reception, the dining
area was decorated with
wrought iron candelabras
with white tapers entwined
with English Ivy. Lace of
yellow Irish linen covered
the table and the center-
piece of yellow rose buds
and fern carried out the
bride’s chosen colors. After
cutting the tiered wedding
cake, the couple left for a
short trip. The bride chose
a long sleeve blue sheer
voile sheath dress as her
going away dress with
white accessories. Upon
returning, Mr. and Mrs.
Rhodes will be at home in
the Tennessee community.
Mrs. Rhodes returns to
S.F.A. this fall where she
will be a senior major-
ing in Home Economics
and Mr. Rhodes returns
to work for Trailmobile
of Longview. A pleasant
footnote to the occasion
was a long-distance con-
gratulatory message from
the bride’s brother, Jerry
who is in the U. S. Army
and was unable to attend.
15 May 1986 - What
Do You Think? By Neuville
Bogard. When looking for
something to write about
this week I came upon the
idea of doing something we
all are interested in when
we start on what is known
as over the hill group. I
think of what an old friend
of mind, Uncle Bill Walker,
had to say about the stages
of life. He said a man goes
through three stages: 1. He
loves to tell of his Social
and Romantical affairs. 2.
He loves to talk about his
Monetary success. 3. This
is when he likes to discuss
Health and Regularity.
Uncle Bill has been gone
for a long time now but I
still remember his sayings
and find he was pretty well
right. The words of advice
I like a lot are found in the
words of a song when it
says, “Yesterday’s gone
and tomorrow may never
be mine. This leaves us
living one day at a time.”
Some poet whose name I
don’t recall, had these sad
words to say, “Of all sad
words of tongue or pen the
saddest are, it might have
been.” I believe the best
thing to do is don’t look
back. What do you think?
