School band students have
distinguished themselves as
the first ever Region 8 1A
band to earn the top award
three years in a row.
The Kerens Bobcat
Band earned its third
straight UIL “Sweep-
stakes” Award this month.
This is only the sixth time
in the band’s 75-plus year
history it has earned the
highly sought-after UIL
“Sweepstakes” Award.
The 77-member band is
under the direction of high
school vice principal Chris
Whorton and Brian
Smetzer.
In order to win a
“Sweepstakes,” the band
must earn a “F irst Division”
July 1, according to the
UIL website.
Also during the meeting,
the school’s boys and girls
in each of the three UIL
competitions - Marching,
Concert and Sight-read-
ing. The band earned a
“First Division” in UIL
Marching on Oct. 23,
2013. Then completed the
contest season March 5
by earning a “First Divi-
sion” (awarded by all six
judges) on the stage and
the sight-reading room at
the UIL Concert and
Sight-reading Contest.
The UIL “Sweepstakes”
Award was previously
earned by the Kerens
Bobcat Band during the
2000-01, 2003-04,
2008-09, 2011-12, and
2012-13 school years.

what is required by a 1A
band at contest. UIL re-
quires that 1A bands pre-
pare a march and two
other “Grade 1” pieces of
music from the state list.
The Award Winning Ker-
ens Bobcat Band per-
formed the “Grade 3.5”
march entitled “Joyce’s
71st Regiment March,”
and two “Grade 2” pieces
entitled “Battle Pavane”
and “Cumberland Cross.”
This program exceeds the
requirements of a 2A band

pared to a program re-
quired of a 3 A band pro-
gram at contest.

Hannah Hall
hefts her way
to state
powerlifting
title
By Russell Slaton

KEREN S-Kerens High
School senior Hannah Hall
won the state powerlifting
championship March 14,
bringing home the gold
medal to add to her other
honors and accolades.
“Hannah set her goal,”
her coach, Clay Ard said.
“She chose the hardest
goal to attain in Texas high
school sports. It wasn’t
just words, it was the ac-
tions from those words
that made her a state
champion. It was a true gift
to get to work with her on
this journey.”
The Bobcat contingent
traveled to Corpus Christi
this time, where Hall com-
peted in the 1A, 220-
pound class. Her best lifts
were 350 pounds for the
squat, 165 pounds for the
bench press, and 360
pounds for the dead lift.
That totals a whopping
875 pounds.
The Texas High School
Women’s Powerlifting
Association’s champion-
ship included more than
800 competitors this year,
which is likely a record for
the event, and continues to
increase in popularity
among high-school ath-
letes. Having the meet in
coastal Corpus Christi
during spring break helps,
too, where it’s hosted at
the American Bank Cen-
ter.
Hannah competed
against 114 others at the
1A level, and in her weight
class beat competitors
from Center Point, Blue
Ridge, Ganado,
Hermleigh, Colmensneil,
Olney, Pettus, Bosqueville,
Valley Mills and Cross
Plains. The second-place
finisher from Center Point
was a full 35 points behind
in the final standings.
This state championship
comes on the heels of Hall
placing second at region
competition, from which
the top two finishers in
each event, and the top
qualifying totals, advance
to the state meet.
