Mr. and Mrs. Donald Me-j
roney of Corpus Christl, both]
of whom claim Texon as (
their birthplace, were among
the former residents attend-
ing the recent homecoming
at this once-actlve oil camp.
She was the former Miss
Mary Ann Barbee. They at-
tended the lower grades in
the Texon school, and later
attended school in Big Lake
where they graduated from
Reagan County High School
in 1954. The couple plans to
move to Austin where he will
enroll this fall as an aero-
nautics engineer major at
the University of Texas.
While In West Texas, they
were guests In the home of
his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.
S. Meroney of Big Lake. Also
a house guest in the Meroney
home was Mrs. Clyde Bone of
Corpus Christ! who is the
former Miss June Barbee, sis-
ter of Mrs. Donald Meroney.
Accompanying her here to
attend the celebration was
her father, Curtis Barbee of
Lovelady, who was a house
guest of Mr. and Mrs. Ike
Chaffin.
Seven Big Lake Boy Scouts
will participate In a shake-
down camp to be held at
Camp Fawcett this week end
for Concho Valley Council
Scouts and their leaders who
will attend the National
Jamboree at Valley Forge in
July. A total of 111 Scouts in
the Council plan to be among
the 50,000 boys expected at
Valley Forge.
At this shakedown camp,
the boys will get organized
for the national event; form
into patrols; pack their gear,
labeling each article; be
given valuable Information
concerning the coming trip;
and practice cooking meals
and pitching tents in the
same manner in which they
will do at Valley Forge. ,
Big Lake Scouts making
the trip to Camp Fawcett and
also the Jamboree are Wayne
Proffitt, John Dolan, Tommy
Miller, Jerry Stewart, Steve
Matthews, Billy Bowen and
Boniel Low, all members of
Troop 58. They will be ac-
companied by James W. Mat-
thews, who is Scoutmaster of
Troop 58 and who will serve]
as assistant Scoutmaster at
Valley Forge.
For the trip to Camp Faw-
cett, the group will leave here
Friday morning at 8:00 o’-j
clock; and plans for the trip
to Valley Forge call for them
to leave San Angelo by plane

Gordon F. Thrall returned
last week from Jamestown, N.
Y. to which place he had ac-
companied his mother, Mrs.
Clyde Thrall, who will remain
for a longer visit. The main
purpose of the trip was to at-
tend the wedding of her
granddaughter, Beverly Joyce
Thrall, who became the bride
of David Fredland. While
aWay, Mr. Thrall and his
mother attended the funeral
of his aunt, Mrs. Lucille Wills,
a sister of the late Clyde
Thrall.

LOCAL WOMEN RETURN
FROM TRIP TO VALLEY
Mrs. Henry Schooler and
Mrs. Ernest McIntyre return-
ed late Monday from a six-
day trip to McAllen where
they visited with their daugh-
ters and families. Mrs.
Schooler was a guest in the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Ben
Burkholder and sons, Duncan
Mark, Carter and Rees. Mrs.
McIntyre was guest of Mr.
and Mrs. Jackie Holmes and
sons, Mark and Brian.
Mrs. Schooler reports that
she attended the First Meth-
odist Church in McAllen Sun-
day to hear the Rev. Grady
Peters, former Big Lake min-
ister. Braxton Peters, young-
er son of Rev. and Mrs. Pet-
ers, was organist at the
church. He is a music major
at Del Mar College in Corpus
Christ!. She also reported a
family trip to Port Isbell.
The Burkholder family
moved to the Lower Rio
Grande Valley from Pecos
last February. Mr. Burkhold-
er Is engaged as a promoter
in agricultural work in Tam
pico In Old Mexico.
Returning to Big Lake with
the women were two of Mrs.
Schooler’s grandsons, Duncan
Mark age 11, and Carter age
9. Also a guest of Mbs.
Schooler ls another grand-
son, Tommy Thornton, 13-
year-old son of Capt. and
Mrs. James Thornton who
are presently In Omaha,
Neb. where he is working to-
ward his degree at the Uni-
versity of Omaha. They had
been living In Del Rio where
he was stationed at Laughlln
Air Force Base.
CIRCLE MEETS
Mrs. Gordon E. Roach was
hostess to the Eudaly WMS
Circle of the First Baptist
Church on Monday evening
in her home. Topic of the
program was “To God Be The
Glory”. Present were Mes-
dames H. J. Walls, Morris
Askew, Lula Cartwright, C. H.
Midgley, E. L. Clifton and
Roach as members; and Mbs.
Clyde Gay, a visitor.

pared by Mrs. I. N. Riley and
W. L. Coleman.
Sandwiches, made with the
prepared spreads, and also
the drinks, were served to

The club, which is meeting
only once a month this sum-
mer, will hold its next meet-

Six-year-old Bobbie Marie
and her four-year-old broth-
er, Steven Bower, arrived
here recently to share home-
life with Mr. and Mrs. Bobby
Pepper, having been adopted
by this Big Lake couple. Be-
fore their adoption, the chil-
dren were living in the Texas
Baptist Children’s Home at
Round Rock. Bobbie Marie
will be entering school in Big
Lake as a first grader.
Mrs. Pepper, teacher in the
local elementary school for
several years, plans to teach
again this coming school1
term. Mr. Pepper is employed
as a mail carrier at the Big
Lake Post Office.
