Morris is new Bear baseball coach
$
MONTGOMERY - The
Montgomery athletic department
announced the hiring of long-time
assistant Chris Morris as the new
head baseball coach Wednesday.
“Chris has been in our program
for 12 years and in all 12 years he
has demonstrated what a great
baseball mind he has,”
Montgomery athletic director Clint
Heard said.
Morris takes over the head
coaching position for Heard who
earlier this year accepted the job of
athletic director.
“I was very excited and
honored to hire Chris,” Heard said.
"I hold him in the highest regard
and to be able to hand the program
to somebody like Chris is great.”
The job will be Morris' first as
a head coach.
“I’m extremely excited about
it,” Morris said. “I feel privileged
and honored to take over and try to
continue to take this program to the
level which Clint took it."
In 2008 the Bears advanced to
the Region III-4A quarterfinals
before falling to Brenham.
“There’s going to be a lot of
pressure on me following Clint
because he’s such a great coach.”
Morris said. “The fortunate thing
for me is that I know the system.
“Coach Heard really let me be
involved in the decision making
over the years and that should help
make the transition easier," Morris
said.
Heard said more than 70 people
applied for the head coaching job at
Montgomery. But the athletic-
director stressed that Morris was
not given any special treatment in
the hiring process.
“Staying within the system was
not a factor at all,” Heard said. "We
wanted to find the best educator
and the best baseball mind. Chris
was simply the best candidate for
the job.”
Morris, who graduated from
Gilmer High School and then
played college baseball at Abilene
Christian, said the changing of the
head coach will not change the kind
of the baseball played at
Montgomery.
“We’re going to continue to
work hard every day and be more
prepared then our opponents,"
Morris said. “All we can do as
coaches is prepare the kids to the
best of our ability and then it’s up
to them to go out there and get the
job done.”
Having a large number of
players returning from this year’s
squad which reached the
quarterfinals is something Morris
said will make life easier for him.
“We've got a good group of
juniors coming back and we feel
encouraged," he said. “The group
that’s here now has made a playoff
run. So they knbw what it takes to
be successful.”
As familiar as Morris might be
with the Montgomery program, the
new head coach admitted that there
will be a period of adjustment.
“This is my first head coaching
job,” Morris said. "I probably
won’t really know all that goes into
being a head coach until sometime
next season.”

for the Cav s to earn an invite out

returning starters, while guard
Adam Rowe was one of the first
players off the bench last season.

IF YOU LEAVE THE TOASTER PLUGGED IN
Actually, there is a difference.
Unplugging appliances could save
you dollars (not dimes) on your next
electric bill.
So, if you leave appliances plugged in,
you’re buying power you’re not using at
all. Unplug your coffee pot, hair dryer,
toaster, radio and cell phone charger
and see what a difference it can make.
Small appliances and electronics that
are plugged in draw energy even when
they’re off. In fact, some estimates
indicate that as much as 40 percent
of the power smell appliances use is
consumed while the appliance is off.
