compete as medalist
in Regional golf meet

Kenny Baggett, junior at Reagan
County High School, will be attend-
ing the Regional golf meet April 26
^ and 27. It will be held in Abilene.
The only two teams in our district
that arc compelcting arc Ozona and
McCamey along with 14 other
teams for the regional title. Kenny
will be competing as medalist.
Varsity track members
to compete in Regional
meet April 27 & 28
by April Veazey
Friday and Saturday, April 27 &
28, the Varsity girls and boys track
will be competing in the Regional
track meet. The track meet will be in
Abilene at Abilene Christian Uni-
versity.

Who’s Who
The 1990 edition of WHO'S
WHO IN AMERICAN UNIVER-
SITIES AND COLLEGES will
include the names of several stu-
dents from Howard Payne Univer-
sity who have been selected as na-
tional outstanding leaders. Campus
nominating committees and editors
of the annual directory have in-
cluded the names of these students
based on their academic achieve-
ment, service to the community,
leadership in extracurricular activi-
ties and potential for continued suc-
cess.
These students join an elite
group of students selected from
more than 1,400 institutions of
higher learning in all 50 states, the
District of Columbia and several
foreign nations. Outstanding stu-
dents have been honored in the
annual directory since it was first
published in 1934.
Among the students named this
year from HPU is Tonya Cere sc
McGuire of Barnhart. Tonya is a
senior sociology major with a minor
in social work. While at Howard
Payne, she participated in Gamma
Beta Phi and BSU drama. Tonya,
duaghtcr of Mr. and Mrs. Alan
McGuire, was a 1986 graduate of
Reagan County High School in Big
Lake.

Chad Elkins is selected as RCHS
Freshman Student of the Month
Chad Elkins
The freshman student of the
month for Apnl is Chad Elkins.
Chad is the son of Mike and Mary
Lou Elkins.
Chad has been a very active stu-
dent at RCHS. He participated on
the J.V. Tennis Team his first year.
He also parucipatcd in UIL one-act
play, receiving Honorable-Mention
All-StarCastat the distnctcom peti-
tion. Chad is also an excellent aca-
demic student. He has been on ci-
ther the "A" or "A-B” honor roll
every six weeks, and one of the lop
ten students of the freshman class.
Chad participates in several or-
ganizations outside of school. He is
a member of MYF at the First
United Methodist Church. In the
Reagan County 4-H Club he is a
member of the Plant Identificauon
Team. He will be attending State 4-
H Round-Upin June atTcxas A&M
University as a member of the plant
identification team.

FHA Chapter members to
attend State meet in Dallas

The Reagan County High School
FHA Chapter will be going to Dal-
las tomorrow for the Slate meeting.
The students will leave Friday
morning and be back Sunday eve-
ning. Those attending will be
Robert Lalhan, Marcic Ortiz, Tam-
mic Bull, and Rosie Valcnzula.
While in Dallas, the students will
beattending meetings about various
subjects dealing with FHA. The
main objective of this meeting is to
motivate individuals to strive for
success by developing skills for life
through character, development,
creative and critical thinking, inter-
personal communications, practical
know ledge, and vocational prepara-
tion.
Mrs. Kristi Copeland, FHA
sponsor, will accompany the stu-
dents to Dallas.
1990-91 cheerleaders and mascot
were announced April 18th

Cheerleader tryouts at Reagan
County High School were held
Wednesday, April 18 at 3:00 in the
gym.
After tryouts, students voted for
their favorites. The results arc as
follows. Varsity cheerleaders for
the 1990-91 school year arc: Sandy
Lara, April Strube, Jennifer Strubc,
Rosie Valenzuela, and Becky Wat-
son. Junior Varsity cheerleaders arc
Tricia Rodriquez, Dixie Roper,
Linda Sutton, Angie Beam, and
Yvonne Hernandez. The Mascot is
Jamie Barton.

Club Volleyball Tournament

Eight members of the Reagan
County High School Student Coun-
cil will be traveling to Austin to the
State Student Council Convention,
April 26 and 27.
These students will attend work-
shops and sessions concerning
school improvement and school
activities. Those attending will be
Jeffrey Williams, Jeffery Morris,
Jason Kctchum. Raymond Diaz,
Jennifer George, Wcndi Skelton,
Amber Neff, and Caline Ratliff.
Sponsors attending are Sandra
Walker, Kathleen Gray, Joy Jones,
and Mit/i Drennan.

Robert Lathan qualifies for
state academic meet in Austin

Reagan County High School has
qualified one student for the Uni-
versity Intcrscholastic League Aca-
demic State Meet. May 4-6 at the
University of Texas at Austin. The
qualifier is Robert Lalhan. He
earned eligibility by placing first at
the UIL regional meet, held in
Abilene on Apnl 21,1990.
"Reaching the State level of aca-
demic competition shows determi-
nation and preparation on the part of
the contestant and sponsor.” Dr.
Bailey Marshall, UIL director said.
“Students who compete at the UIL
State Meet represent the elite in
their field. The development of the
skills to handle the intense competi-
tion and the attainment of knowl-
edge required to achieve this honor
will benefit the contestant far be-
yond the high school years ”
Contests range from headline
wnung to Lincoln-Douglas debate,
calculator appiicauons to account-
ing. Of the million and a half stu-
dents who parucipatcd in UIL ac-
tivities m 1987-88, over one- half
million students competed in one or
more of the 19 general academic
contests.
In participating at the State Meet,
students quidify for Texas Intcr-
scholastic League Foundation
scholarships. During 1989-90, the
T1LF awarded more than $468,000
in scholarship grants to 361 college
students who competed at the UIL
State Academic Meet. In 1990-91,
the T1LF expects to award an esti-
mated new and renewed grants,
valued at approximately $489,000.
The TILF funds are made possible
through grams from foundations,
individuals and families. The TILF
has almost $2,000,000 in endowed
funds.

Reagan County High School had
many excellent students make it to
regional in tennis. Some of these
were: doubles team, Steven Cole
and Clint Askins as 1st in District
with a 14-2 record; and doubles
team, Jason Kohutck and Joey
Lozano as 2nd in District with an 8-
2 record. In singles were Lon Well-
man as 2nd in Distncl with a 17-3
record and Lalo Lcija as 2nd in
Distncl with a 17-5 record.
NHS induction
to be held May 2
The Regional Tennis Meet will
be held in Abilene on April 26, 27,
and 28. These students will be
competing in Region 1-AA.
